HOLY CARP!!!
|
I read with great fascination. Parenthood is a mysterious thing to me. I say this because my gut reaction is, "I'd never buy a dress like that for my minor daughter." Then after reading all the responses from parents, and people I respect, I see that my reaction must have been wrong. ![]() I can understand why the religious right has embraced homeschooling. I'd consider it too. I'm to be congratulated for wanting my daughter to look like that?

If I had a teen daughter I'd wish she wouldn't want to look like that. I'm 100% sure I am not being realistic. I'm also 100% sure I never want to be a parent. Hence, the 100% detached and idealistic perspective. |

Kenny, I love your honesty. I can say, as a parent of a teen, that that dress is wonderful. Perhaps as a parent of a boy, I don't fully understand the teenage girl (although I remember a lot ), but from what I've seen lately, I'd be thrilled if that was my daughter's choice!! And I'd be thrilled if my son chose to go to a dance with a girl in that dress. Really, some girls dress in some pretty scary clothes, and that dress is not in that category. It's classy. As for the price, I don't know about where you are, but that's a bargain dress in this neighbourhood. I'd be proud to have my daughter in that dress, especially knowing how much she loved it. There aren't a lot of win/win situations with teens; I think Mark got one here. |

It is a cute dress and Mark's story is a sweet one. Kenny, are you looking at the video picture and associating it with how Mark's daughter will look in it? As someone who will be a mother of teen daughters, I find it refreshing that the girls in Katie's article (and Mark's daughter) are picking clothes that are tasteful and flattering. The Housebound hooked me up to a site called something like Gangster Prom. Now Kenny, those are what you wouldn't want your teenage daughter to look like. |

Good buy Mark. You got off easy. I know some of the kids spend 200+ on prom dresses. $126 total (w/shipping) for such a cool dress. You saved money and scored big points. PLUS think of all the time you have saved... not having to go from STORE TO STORE TO STORE TO STORE....... |

Good going, Mark! Now I can see FrankM doing something similar for his grandchildren just to spike his kids. ![]() Hey Quirt, may be you can get extra discount by buying two at the same time.

Why are you being so Puritanical anyway Kenny? I mean, judging others on outward appearances? That's not like you. Is it? |

That's not like me? Well, Good! Thank God! I'm pleased to not be pigeonholed. I don't make any sense. I am not consistent. I'm free. (Horrible model for a parent - Huh?) Sorry.

Late to the thread... I really like the dress. I definitely would have worn something like that when I was your daughter's age. You met me. I turned out ok, right? Just be glad she's content with an ebay auction for a dress originally purchased at Hot Topic. If she gets into the "real" goth stuff at the goth boutiques, $120 is going to seem like a huge bargain. Please post pics (or at least PM them to me) when she wears it. I'm sure she'll look fabulous! |

Sorry Mark, I just would want to be back to the 1950s and have the whole Donna Reed family if I had kids - though I guess it would be Don Reed. Clearly I'm not being not realistic. That's all. I should learn to just keep my mouth shut at times. |

It's OK Kenny. Really. You are just a little confused or you are confusing me because of your apparent normal liberal attitudes toward many if not most subjects. Then you turn into Ozzie and Harriet when kids are involved???? Wouldn't you be perpetuating the stereotypes of not only gays but blacks, hispanics, asians, et. al. ? The 50's represent a lot of bad things in my mind. I hate the pop-culture of the 1950's. I hate the music, the idols, the slang, the Ozzie and Harriet thing and just about everything about that decade. And I wasn't even born until 1962! |

I don't make that connection. Not wanting my hypothetical daughter to dress in a sexy way has no relation to discrimination against blacks or gays. *You* make that connection. Connections are not necessary. That's what I mean when I say, "I'm free." Again, parenting is a MAJOR mystery to me. I'm fascinated by the idea. At the same time I'm horrified by the idea. Sorry for hijacking your thread. |

No big deal about the hijacking. Your "free". That's good. Parenting is a MAJOR mystery to all new parents. Your values kick in on auto-pilot and most of the time it works out just fine. I personally do not see this dress as a slutty "****-me" dress as we so aptly call them. It is modest by today's "standards". It might not be the "button up the neck don't show any skin burkha/puritanical" type of dress but it is far from a dress that makes a girl look like a slut. |
