Major cool daddy points!

Mark, does she have an event in mind for it?

I really liked this dress (in the video).
I like the band too.
I saw an interview with them on MTV ... They're okay for kids.
I'd definitely wear this to my prom ... if I were 17 today.

You're one cool dad Mark.

Good going, Mark.

There must be more to the story. How did you know about this dress (dresses are not a category I usually browse on eBay) and how did you know that this particular dress would be specialr for your daughter. There must be one or two parenting lessons hiding inside this winning (in lots of ways) bid.

Al,

She sent me the link to the auction in an email. She left me notes around the house, and she asked me direct many times if I had looked at it.

I acted like I didn't have time to go look at it "cause daddy is really busy". I secretly went and looked and noted the auction end time. About 20 minutes before the end of auction I logged on to eBay and watched.

I watched the bidding go up and was getting concerned that it was going to cost too much but precisely 24 seconds before the end of auction I submitted my maximum amount I was willing to spend and I ended up getting it for $5.00 more than the current bid.

Then I went up to her room and asked her to "show me this dress you want" which she replied, "it is probably too late". She had it bookmarked! She went to the site and her first reaction was one of disappointment as the auction had ended. and She said "see? it's too late". I asked her what the winning bid was and the bidder's name and she took a second look.

That's when it happened. That look that you wish you had photographed, the shriek of joy (shrieks would be more like it) and the hugs.

It was a great moment for sure.

There was a recent news story highlighting the different tastes teens have in grad-prom fashion. In contrast to the traditional long satin gown (coral) and the "I want to be older" nightclubbing dress (white), I particularly loved the black dress one young girl chose. It's upbeat and suits this girl's youth perfectly. Click through the 3 pics while reading This Story . Click for a larger image of the black dress if you'd like.

Those sequin-y shrugs have been lifesavers in the Nina household. They allow kids to buy those strapless, funky dresses but put a shrug on the top to avoid the hooker-in-training look.

It's hard to find the right dress, particularly for the under 16 crowd.

I agree, the black one is great. And none of them are sleazy looking. Mark, your daughter's dress is wonderful.

Awwww, Mark, what a beautiful, heart-warming story. What a good dad you are. I'm betting this was really important for her, and she will long remember that you understood how much it meant to her.
The bonus is that it is a great looking dress, very classy!

I'm still smiling.
