I'd hate to think what would have happened if they did that during Clinton's presidency.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

I didn't vote for Bush either time around, but I'm inclined to believe that this was a 'we can do it because he's down' cheap shot on behalf of a few of CNN's technical production staff.

I quite honestly don't see the big deal. Yeah, someone at CNN goofed. But it didn't really show the president in bad light. We all know that the speeches are very carefully scripted and rehearsed. I don't think it made Bush look bad or anything (and trust me, I'm more than willing to search out the bad in that man) - or that it was intentional. A friend of mine does the technical job (with another non-news network here in Canada) that probably made this goof happen, and my guess is that they knew there were still a couple minutes to the speech starting time, dashed off to the bathroom before Bush appeared. They came running back into the room and saw Bush obviously in the middle of his speech (or that is how it would appear to them upon entering the room) and in a panic hit the switch to broadcast. When they realized their mistake, they switched it back. I'm just not sure I see any malice behind this. If it was a calculated move, they likely would have picked a spot where he wasn't as composed.

I've never seen this happen on another presidential address, nor really on much of anything else for that matter. Given the gravity of a the occasion and the normally seamless performance of all networks, heads should roll, accidental or not.

Tee hee - it's actually amazing how often it happens. Perhaps not during Presidential addresses - but compared to the number of hours on TV, they are so rare that it's not surprising. The tech job that puts stuff to air is a VERY dull one. Lots of sitting around staring at monitors waiting for something to go wrong, and occasionally pressing a button. It's one of those jobs that is totally dull and requires no skill UNTIL something goes wrong - then you have to think quickly and know your stuff. It's also a job that is done by fairly entry-level people in that industry.

It was just a screw up. They mistook a rehearsal for the real thing. Maybe someone on the camera crew was hoping Bush would flip us all the bone but I doubt it. I'm sure someone will be taken to task for making CNN look bad, not Bush who did not come out badly in this thing at all.

The big deal is you don't screw up on a live presidential address. Every one of us who has a job has that innate knowledge of when you can be a little relaxed and when you have to be on your toes. This was the latter.

how do you know it was a cnn guy? he said the press pool guy inadvertently switched on the feed. (the major outlets use a pool for such things so as not to have 50 cameras there).

it coulda been a bible-toten fox news guy. or a pinko commie from cbs.

who knows.

who cares.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

so? it's not a big deal. it might (maybe should) cost that guy his job, but to the viewers, it's not a big deal. relax.

Because it didn't show up on the other networks.

Lets face it, if everyone who made dumb-ass mistakes during presidential speeches was fired, Bush would be long gone.

I am not concerned with political fallout from it. But, as one whose major was journalism/public relations, there is a standard of professionalism that should be adhered to and was not.

I am, however, ever more disappointed with the continuous lowering of journalistic standards both in print media and broadcast. The gaffes I see in both daily would have gotten anyone fired when standards counted. That is my issue here, not the fact that it was Bush.

I really don't want us to relax to the point where truly stupid mistakes like this are A-OK.

I worked as a co-op technician for the BBC years ago. The problem with broadcasting, and why I didn't end up working there, is that the day consisted of 7 3/4 hours of total boredom, with about 15 minutes of blind panic when something went wrong. During that 15 minutes people are working under sometimes extreme pressure, and mistakes happen. I was often extremely impressed to see how calm people can be when something unexpected happens. I was sat plodding away with a VT editor preparing for the days local news broadcast when 5 minutes before the news was due to go out, a big story came in, totally unedited. The editor had to get in a broadcastable state with about 5 minutes to go, as well as present the tape she'd mostly finished on the rest of the news and to be honest I would have cracked up and started running around the studio like a headless chicken. She didn't, and got the story out bang on time. Sometimes it's a lot harder than it looks.

There were a couple of instances where things were broadcast that President Reagan didn't intend - the famous "we're bombing them tomorrow" bit is an example.

Clinton had his whole State of the Union speech missing from the teleprompter - which wasn't necessarily a a bad thing... I really hated his State of the Union Speeches...

These things shouldn't happen - but they do. I have a Wall Street Journal where they could not spell Journal properly...s..t happens...

I can recall once when I was Planning Director for a City sending out a public notice for a hearing where, in very large and bold letters across the top, it said "PUBIC HEARING."
