Middle Aged Carp
|
All, As you know, I met you on the Piano Forum. I love the piano, but lately, I have been having problems playing due to an injury in my middle finger on the right hand, which resulted in inflammation -- now possibly arthritis. I was wondering if taking up guitar might be a better option? (Learning classical guitar) Thank you, ILM |

Guitar isn't a bad idea, but you might not be able to pick the strings with all 5 fingers if you need to, but chords and general rocking out might work. Harmonica?

Try a bowed instrument like the violin or cello. Even with an injury to your right middle finger, you should still be able to hold the bow in your right hand, and then all of the fingering is done with the left hand. Should you want to pluck the strings, you can use your right index finger. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
I vote for the cello.. if there were another instrument beside piano and bass guitar I would LOVE to play, that is it. Such a beautiful sound. |

If Ilikemozart is right handed lap style Dobro will be pretty difficult. The Jerry Douglas/Rob Ickes style is based on Earl Scruggs rolls. After the thumb, your middle finger gets a real workout. Having said that, Tut Taylor managed to play Dobro using only plectrum. |

More a WMD than a musical instrument. They will however have the added advantage of making you forget all about your finger injury. |

Meg: I can't believe this is happening to me. I can never go back to school again. Stewie: Oh yes Meg, yes, yes, yes, everything was going swimmingly for you until this. Yes, yes, this is the thing that will ruin your reputation. Not your years of grotesque appearance or awkward social graces, or that Felix Ungerish way you clean your sinuses. No, no, no, it's this. Do you hear yourself talk? I might kill you tonight. | |

I don't know how non-musicians tolerate us. I think it's the poor non-musician who is most likely to go crazy in a 'mixed marriage'. I play piano and sing. Husband's a fine tenor, plays cello, guitar, picks at the piano. Kids all sing, play piano, one plays cello, another plays guitars. Our house *always* sounds like the hall at the school where all the practice rooms are. I adore that cacaphony and really feel weird when it's not there. I know it would drive a normal person, even a music lover, completely nuts though. |
