Perhaps he should do more fishing:

Bush’s best moment in office? Catching big fish

MSNBC

President tells German newspaper landing perch was best, 9/11 the worst

BERLIN - President Bush told a German newspaper his best moment in more than five years in office was catching a big perch in his own lake.

"You know, I've experienced many great moments, and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5-pound perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published Sunday. Bush said the worst moment was Sept. 11, 2001, when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

"In such a situation it takes a while before one understands what is happening," Bush said. "I would say that this was the hardest moment, once I had the real picture before my eyes."

Because Bild could not immediately furnish English quotes, Bush's comments were translated from the German. The paper said the White House planned to release an authorized English version of the interview Monday.

And this is how the MSM reports a falsehood that becomes "conventional wisdom."

For another take on the story....

This stems of course from a Reuters story that said the following about an interview Bush had with the German weekly Bild:

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

Reuters got the story wrong, if that was even possible. They omitted the fact that Bush laughed while making this comment, indicating that it was a joke, which is even present in the German version of the interview. The White House released an English transcript on Sunday, the same day Reuters ran their story, where they not only include the fact that Bush laughed, but that the fish in question was a bass, not a perch.

Do facts matter for the liberal blogosphere? Heck no! Here's DailyKos just a few hours ago:

Bush lied about that perch
Jesus. H. Christ. Is Bush even capable of telling the truth?

Bush says the highlight of his presidential career was catching a 7.5 pound perch in his lake. Except that...

The only problem is that the world's record for the largest freshwater perch caught is 4 pounds 3 ounces.
So Bush either doubled the world record, and didn't report it, or he's a liar.

Incidentally, see how three presidents answered the question, "What was the best moment of your presidency?"

Apparently, since Bush didn't have any "best moments", he had to invent one.

Apparently there was no possibility that the "conservative media" translated the interview from German incorrectly, or that the Germans translated Bush's comments incorrectly. Nope, either Bush broke a world record, or he's a liar. There are no other alternatives!

Of course the time that Bush answered the question seriously got no press:

Q -- they had arrested Saddam, was this the best moment of your presidency?

THE PRESIDENT: It was a big moment in my presidency. No, I wouldn't say it's the best moment. The best moment happened when -- you know, when I meet people who do heroic things, whether it's to help somebody who hurts or whether it's a generous citizen who lifts up the spirit of a person. And I fully realize that those thousands of acts of kindness lift up the whole spirit of the country. Those are the best moments.

For the record, the Washington Post got the story right:

Bush admitted it was not easy to pick a best moment because "I've had a lot of great moments," according to a transcript of the Friday interview released Sunday.

"I would say the best moment was when I caught a 7 1/2-pound largemouth bass on my lake," Bush said, laughing.

So, based on your report, George, if the questioner feeds Bush a possible answer, he will go with it. If the questioner does not feed him an answer, he thinks the question is a joke.

Based on my report, CNN did not report that the President responded with a joke.

So, Rick -- does it not even trouble you in the least that based on a mistranslation (barsch can mean "pike", "perch" or "bass"), the Daily Kos immediately accuses Bush of lying? Are you that ideological that the truth bears no weight?

If one knew the laconic humor of Texans the way I do they would have caught the joke, just as he caught the perch.

He's been reading about how his approval ratings are so low, and this buffoon asks him what he likes best. He gave the question all the respect it was due.

What is truly amazing to me is that anyone would not have immediately grasped that this was a joke. We actually have people in this country that seriously believe it possible for Forest Gump to be elected President.

A-frickin-mazing.

Never mind all this rubbish, I have proof conclusive that Bush is a liar! In the same interview he said:

Quote:

But he added: "There is a new generation of Americans who have grown up with soccer.

"For them, the World Cup is of great interest and it's the most important sporting event in the world. And some of us, the old guys, are beginning to understand how important the World Cup is for the entire world."

Now if that isn't a crock of brown sticky stuff, I don't know what is!

Steve,

Seriously, do you actually believe a man who would in all seriousness answer the question, "What was your best moment as President" with, "I ca' a fish oncet." could be elected President?

If you do then maybe you need to look in that box of chocolates.

This business of Bush being a moron is very amusing and such but people who really harbor that notion maybe should take a good hard look at themselves.

I'll level with ya, JB. I don't think GWB is Forrest Gump, and I sincerely believe that there is more going on in his head than he lets on.

But he does say the dumbest stuff...

When I first read the post that began this thread I immediately apprehended th fact that Bush was blowing this guy off along with his stupid question. It is funny how his detractors are less capable at seeing subtlety than he is at using it. It is ironic that they insist on making him out to be the stupid one.

We're not being defensive - we're getting tired of liberals stating ideological opinions as if they were fact, and then not responding when asked to back up their claims. None of you can, you just make your rabid hate speech talking points over and over, no matter how many times it is shown to be incorrect, and no matter how massive the evidence against you may be. That gets frustrating - it's like talking to preprogrammed robots.

Oh - you *are* preprogrammed robots. You're democrats.....

Absolutely.

The economy is in the tank, interest rates are at an all-time high, inflation is rampant, the stock market is doing zilch, and every third-world dictator thinks he can thumb his nose at the most powerful nation on the face of the earth.

We are talking about Jimmy Carter, aren't we?
