Is creepy! Those trains look evil! Plus all that stuff about "Useful Engines" sounds like indoctrination to me. Luke received several of the videos because he loves trains, and he loves the videos, but they creep me and M&M's out. Are we the only ones? What are your feelings about the evil that is Thomas?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

My grandson has all the Tomas the Tank video's, books, pajamas, bed, shirts, as well as all the train pieces.

I have watched several of the video's with him and I don't see the evil. There was no murder, rape, robbery, in the video's that I watched. Do some of the pieces have ugly faces? Sure, but that don't make them evil.

I hope that Luke dosn't see, through your eyes, what you see.

Interesting. Let your son watch TTT, but perhaps get some Ivor The Engine videos for yourself and M&M's...?

Ivor is nowhere near as anthropomorphic, although he does communicate with humans - through a bassoon.

My son loves Thomas with a passion. The original books were written by a Church of England clergyman, so I suspect evil references may be in your imagination

We've got the full set of the original books, and I have to admit the writing has dated quite badly, but the TV program is still pretty good IMO. If you want a laugh, try getting hold of the original set of programs, which were narrated by Ringo Starr. They've been re-done for the US, as Ringo's accent is probably a little too scouse for the average American pre-schooler.

A lot of the stories in the books have a distinct 'diesel is evil' undercurrent, as they were written during the period when the UK was converting to diesel from steam, and Rev. Awdry was presumably none too pleased.

If you want to see real evil at work, try watching Bibleman. :hair:

HOLY CARP!!!
LD, when my son was probably Luke's age, he saw Thomas for the first time on tv....and he screamed and asked me to turn it off. Covered his eyes, and said the the faces were scary. It didn't seem right to him to have these 'moving' faces on trains. But he kept talking about it, and wanted to try again the next day. I can't remember if he got over it right away, (I doubt it, but he was fascinated/scared at the same time). Anyways, he ended up a huge TTE fan, had lots of books, and the trains themselves. We only ever saw the Ringo versions, they were good fun.

It's funny about boys and their train phase. Trains and dinosaurs. :thumb:

Ivor the Engine was great!! or was it Ivor the Steam? Hardly ever got to see it here, though.

Ivor the Engine. The train driver was called Jones the Steam. I think the guy who did it was called Oliver Postgate - they did a load of different ones, my favourite was one about a Viking called Noggin the Nog.

Right! Jones the Steam. I was recently reading a mystery book, set in Wales, and all the (male) characters were named like this, I guess it's easier than pronouncing last names. I wonder how the wives were referred to....Mrs. Jones the Steam? Mrs. Bob the Meat?
