We have several hundred linear feet of bookshelves, pretty much full. |

I have more books than anyone under the age of 50 that I know. Boxes and shelves full. Only one problem. I don't have enough books. |

i'm not the best mom.. i insist that the children are in bed at a certain time.. (none too early, really)... no tv, computers or talking (and of course they talk). They are allowed to read. We've bought hundreds of books suitable for children from The Little Prince to the Prince and the Pauper. We have comics, joke books, car books, math puzzlers, encyclopedias, National Geographics,...Kipling, Dickens, Melville and Louisa May Alcott.. anything really. I am loathe to insist they adopt a specific disciplines and at this age hope they simply broaden their knowledge base. They read for an hour and usually fall asleep around 10.. totally refreshed and ready to wake at 6.30. enough mom now.. back to your scheduled program |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Sounds like a good mom to me. My folks did pretty much the same. They did not really care what we read as long as we did so. Comic books were fine, too. The actually help kids develop a pretty good vocabulary. Invulnerable. Indestructible. Metamorphosis. Concealed. |

Have you often had to move books? Those boxes get very heavy fast! This is why you always pack books in small boxes. A relative wasn't thinking on a recent move by using a large box to fill with books. By the way, have you noticed that not too many people take advantage of our free libraries? The majority of people I see in libraries are people who have come over here from other countries. They are smart -- they see a free opportunity and take advantage of it. Also, on the subject of books being a benefit, when my kids were a year old, they were taken to the libraries for story hour. It was great. They quickly learned to enjoy reading -- wanted books as Christmas gifts -- and did very well in school and ended up each getting Masters degrees. This was a great topic. Thank you. |
