This is a follow-up of a previous poll The argument that children's sex education should be conducted by their parents comes up from time to time, yet the previous poll shows that those who "learnt about sex from some one" else out numbered those who "learnt about sex from their parent(s)" five to one. So as a follow-up, if you are among those who have learnt about sex from your parent(s), I ask you this: In hind sight, do you wish that you have learnt about sex from some one else instead? (For those who have learnt about sex from their parents, please see this parallel poll). |

It depends on what you mean by "learnt about sex." If you're talking mechanics, biology, "birds and the bees" stuff, parents are as good a source as any, and probably better. But if you're talking about all the extra stuff, feelings, context, reputation, managing yourself in different situations, being able to size someone up as worth your while, all the other stuff besides just how to "do it," I'm not sure parents are the best source. They are a source, to be sure. But there's no way we can fully understand the social stuff that our kids have going on. I think the best we can hope to do is instill some good sense and values, and hope they filter the other stuff they learn through that. |
