Yes, we can. But please send me any offensive posts or MP's pictures of herself scantily clad before deleting them.

Nah.

All that's needed is someone who can access the global edit functions to remove porn, spam, hacks, etc.

Do we need a moderator?

In theory, of course not. We're all reasonable, rational individuals who can tell what to post, what's appropriate, and what's not.

In practice, yes, absolutely. Look what still happens when we have two great moderators working to keep this place as great as it is. Crap happens, always does.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Without a moderator, Caroline's picture would still be up.

Peggy helped me to remove a picture that I had posted innappropriately a couple months ago, which I could not remove myself (because there is a lock on old posts).

Without a moderator, there'd be absolutely nothing to do about trolls.

Jgoo's put up several popular threads as "sticky" threads so that they're always at the top. Without the moderators, either sticky threads wouldn't be possible, or anybody could sticky a thread, and you can imagine the fun trolls would have with that.

The truth is, moderators are important. Usually we don't notice them, because they really make things go much more smoothly than they might otherwise, especially when things get really bad (which doesn't happen very often, thanks to us and also thanks to our moderators).

I thought that was the definition of a moderator around here.

Well, kenny, for someone who doesn't subscribe much to groupthink, I have a hard time imagining that's how it would really go down.

(Not picking on you, by the way, everyone's like that. I think "Oh you can all go to h****, MAKE me change my post" would be repeated too many times to count.)

It is. I just mentioned it because I don't want us to end up being moderated to death the way PW was.

Given the rather stark factionalization around here, I'm not sure that would work. Anyone moderated would assume that it was someone from the Dark Side who did it, out of bias.

Doesn't seem that it would be that big a deal. Wouldn't even need to be proactive about it, just read posts that get reported and make a decision. The only requirement would be that the person isn't sensitive. Could make several people "moderators" for that matter, given that we're pretty much all mature adults. that way nobody would know who deleted which post except other moderators and nobody would know who to hate :)
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I was going to post this in the proper thread for it, but it's locked - so I thought I'd post this here since it's dealing with moderators. There was some discussion about the possible legal implications of MP's picture. Do not take this as me trying to justify the picture being posted, and do not take this as me disagreeing with the picture being removed, or disagreeing with the harm it could cause. But - the picture did not show anything graphic at all, it was just a picture of a headless girl in her underwear. There is no law against that, regardless of her age. Only if she is involved in a sexual act, or if certain.....parts..... are visible does the age of the person in the picture become an issue legally. To be honest, I don't think it's illegal to post fully nude pictures of minors, as long as they aren't doing anything sexual.

That doesn't mean I condone that, agree with it, want to see it, or am in any way justifying it. I'm just pointing out the legality of it. Nothing about the picture violated any law, nor would it have gotten anyone in legal trouble. Only a safety issue existed.

I definitely think there's a need for a moderator, working on a hopefully occasional basis. I think the way that this place has worked since inception is a real triumph of mostly good behaviour and very good moderation. The fact that we only very rarely see a moderator at work is a tribute to what a great job is being done.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?
