If this is how your professors handle it, they are far too focused on the letter of the law than on the spirit of the law.

Well Rick, it's been awhile, but from what I remember, when a possible plagiarism case came up, it was the professor's responsibility to turn the matter over to our Honor Council; they then had no more say in the matter. Investigators, Representatives, other spiffy-sounding titles, we went the whole nine yards with this.

Yeah, we had one of those, and IMHO they're the most unscrupulous bunch I knew of in school. I’m not saying they did things that were unjust, I’m saying that “what’s right” had nothing to do with their ruling. It was a book and a set of rules they followed, regardless of circumstances. Didn’t hold them in much high regard back then, and still don’t.

same with the "Honor Board" at my school
And how are you today?

HOLY CARP!!!
The seminar I went to discussed a Plagiarism Tutorial, a module which was put on the university's website, and subsequently on many of the departments' own web pages. It includes a pre-test, "is this plagiarism?', then content explaining the whole issue, and then quizzes you can take to test yourself. We were all given a sample question and asked to determine if the writing was an acceptable paraphrase, or patchwriting. Most of us did get the right answer, but there weren't many of us that we really sure. Pretty eye-opening.

The idea came about as part of a motion to work with "education rather than policing" in regards to plagiarism. They are also sample exam banks, and sample essays. It was felt that one of the reasons for plagiarism was quite simply, lack of knowledge. Both in regards to what consitutes plagiarism, but also as to expectations.
They also are including a 'tutor checklist', i.e. how to find a tutor, but also what a tutor should do for you, and what they should not.
I got the impression a lot of universities are doing this now.
