I Owe It All To John D'Oh
|
I saw an interesting article today, in Sports Illustrated, of all places. (It was about Lance Armstrong, so there's the tie in.) The budget for the National Cancer Institute for the last 30 years is roughly equal to what we've spent in Iraq in 9 months. And nearly 1 out of 2 Americans alive today can expect to have some form of cancer in their lifetimes. Meanwhile, the latest Administration budget CUTS the National Cancer Institute's budget. (By a small amount, relative to the whole size, but still.) And the National Institutes of Health saw its proposed budget reduced, for the first time in 36 years. |

What a sad reflection on modern values. Of course, this opinion makes me hopelessly naive, and I don't understand, and it's all about Freedom with a capital F, and everything. There may well be a cure for cancer, but there's almost certainly no cure for war. |

Interesting information Quirt. As you might know, I do research/graphics work for government agencies, and by far my biggest client is NCI. It's a shame that the Iraq war is so expensive. If anything, that would be what would ultimately turn me against this administration's agenda - could this money be better spent. But right now, the jury is out. I think the long-term importance of removing murderous dictators, and hopefully planting a seed of promising democracy in a couple countries in such a violent region might in the end be more helpful than applying the money elsewhere. But like I said, the Jury is still out... |

Oh, and not to play the fear card, but let's say we pull out of Iraq and let the insurgents or neighboring countries (like Iran) take over and basically inheret HUGE power and wealth from it, endangering our country like never before... ...perhaps then there wouldn't be an NCI to fund. |

If one wants to understand the morality and values of any Administration, one only need read the Budget they propose. I think this Administration's morality is clear -- and has been clear for a long time. |

Guns or butter? And the second question is whether everything can be solved simply by throwing money at the problem.... |

That question should be asked of both cancer research and foreign policy. |

Where did anyone ever say we should throw money at anything -- except, of course, Bush's war in Iraq? |

Considering he is spending billions helping out the citizens of a foreign country, and considering he has spent a higher % of money towards social programs than Clinton did...I think it's very clear where his priorities are. |

You mean Iraq -- you may want to take a look at how the money in Iraq is being spent and see if you really agree we are helping them out. (And by the way, that is hundreds of billions he is spending there... ) |

Rick, yes I mean Iraq...Afghanistan too, and other countries. Bush has liberated tens of millions of people. John, you disagree? |

No, no, absolutely not. I think Bush is easily the best President since FDR. |
