http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6050201805.html This has been one of the biggest three ring circuses I've ever seen or been involved with. It will be interesting to see what this means for the day labor center and where it goes from here. |

What exactly is/was the purpose of the center? |

To get the day laborers away from street corners, away from 7-11's looking for work from anyone with a pick-up truck, to decrease the change of crime, etc....everything that's involved when you have hundreds of legal/illegal immigrants standing on a corner all day looking for work. EDIT: I'm not sure if I support the center or not. Quite frankly, I think the police should ticket or arrest those who keep loitering there. |

Basically, Dwain, there was a 7-11 where the day laborers would gather. We're talking easily over 100 every day. While standing around waiting for work, these guys woul harass young women, be publicly intoxicated, urinate in the parking lot and street, and a whole lot of other nastiness. Because of the potential political ramifications and legal ramifications of arresting them (with it being well known that the vast majority being illegal) these guys were never arrested, cited, or even told to move along. So, the local gov. decided to build a day labor center a litle further out for these guys to gather at. This created a big hoopla. Some people feeling the cival officials were just trying to hide their dirty underwear, others feeling this was more an issue of private enterprise, and trying to get Lowes or Home Depot to sponsor building a labor center on their premises (Home Depot agreed, but was denied.), others wanting the officials to enforce the laws on the books, and if that meant lots of money tied up into deportation, then so be it. |
