Kerry quotes Jefferson at Grinnel College:
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Kerry_te...k_out_0506.html

"Dismissing dissent is not only wrong, but dangerous when America's leadership is unwilling to admit mistakes, unwilling to engage in honest discussion, and unwilling to hold itself accountable for the consequences of decisions made without genuine disclosure, or genuine debate. As Thomas Jefferson said, "dissent is the highest form of patriotism." "

Only problem is Jefferson never said it.

Assuming the story is right, that's pretty crappy scholarship and pretty crappy fact-checking.

From The Jefferson Library.

Unconfirmed and Incorrectly Attributed Quotes

There are a number of quotes that we do not find in Thomas Jefferson's correspondence or other writings; in such cases, Jefferson should not be cited as the source. Among the most common of these spurious Jefferson quotes are:

"Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
"We should build an aristocracy of achievement based on a democracy of opportunity."
"An informed citizenry is the bulwark of a democracy."
"Information is the currency of democracy."
"A nation is as good as its values."
There is nothing more unequal than the equal treatment of unequal people."
"When the government fears the people, there is liberty; When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
"I have nothing but contempt for anyone who can spell a word only one way."
"I am a big believer in luck. The harder I work, the more I have."
In other cases, quotes are often attributed to Jefferson but were actually said by others:
"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." (John Philpot Curran)
"Those who sacrifice freedom for safety deserve neither." (Benjamin Franklin)
"That government is best which governs least." (Henry David Thoreau)
"I am a revolutionary so my son can be a farmer so his son can be a poet." (John Adams)

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Good article, JB. I particularly enjoyed this part:

"But the high holiness of dissent for its own sake is now the core belief of the Democratic Party: It's not what you're for, it's what you're against."

He pegged it dead on the money.

But another thing caught my eye.. surely I'm not the only one who noticed it:

John Kerry announced this week's John Kerry Iraq Policy of the Week the other day: "Iraqi politicians should be told that they have until May 15 to deal with these intransigent issues and at last put together an effective unity government or we will immediately withdraw our military."

Now, I thought the Iraqis didn't want us there. That's what the democrats keep telling us. But here we have Lurch using our leaving as a threat to motivate the Iraqis to do what he wants. Now I don't know about the rest of you, but if you were in my home against my wishes and I really wanted you to leave, telling me I had to do a particular thing or you would leave would hardly be a way to motivate me to do what you wanted.... Tell me that if I don't vacuum my living room you're going to leave, and I'm going to say "Bye-bye!"......

The saddest part is how so many of them can't even see how bankrupt their party ideology is.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Ok.. let's see. For 2008, the Dems lineup is:

Kerry - Been there, done that badly. he sings a different tune, badly, every week. No chance, and they won't run him. Does not knwo who he is quoting.

Edwards - Lost all credibility when he dropped his criticisms of Kerry and became his lap dog as running mate. No chance. Should have turned down the VP nod and run in 2008, glad he didn't.

Clinton - Once again, been there, done that. Unelectable, I hope. 'We are the president'.

Biden - can you say plaigiarism? Unable to unite the american populace, in my book. Probably has too many skeletons in his closet.

Gore - Nahhhhh.

Lieberman - my fave, but probably not. I think he may have had his fill in 2000.

Anyone else? Is there a leader in the house?

Meanwhile, Howard Dean is still trying to outdo himself at goofiness:

"I was recently asked about the difference between the Democratic and Republican parties,” Dean said. “When it comes right down to it, the essential difference is that the Democrats fundamentally believe it is important to make sure that American Jews feel comfortable being American Jews."
