Finally
Marine survives two tours in Iraq only to be gunned down in Chicago on his way home from a Cubs game.

Friends, Family Gather To Remember Slain Marine

Father Pleads For Information Leading To Gunman

CHICAGO -- Family, friends and fellow servicemen paid tribute to a Marine who died Sunday after being shot on his way home from a Cubs game.

Cpl. Ricky Martinez, who had served two tours of duty in Iraq, was buried on Friday, NBC5's Sharon Wright reported. A military honor guard saluted Martinez's coffin as it passed.

"He went over to Iraq and served the country well, and now he comes back to Chicago and he's gunned down on the streets of Chicago, the mean streets of Chicago," said Eric Sloss of the U.S. Chaplain Service.

Martinez was coming home from a Cubs game with three friends. Martinez had stopped near the intersection of Addison Street and Cicero Avenue when he was shot in the head.

"That's ridiculous, it shouldn't have happened," said friend Jacklyn Grant. "Ricky was not a gang member. He was a Marine."

Martinez had signed up for both the New York City and Chicago police departments.

Initial reports indicate that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity of the vehicle Martinez was driving, Wright reported. A similar black vehicle with tinted windows has been linked to questionable activity.

"For something like that to happen is just, like, crazy," said friend Gabriel Velez. "I just couldn't believe it. I was in shock for a couple of days."

"He was clean as a whistle, as they say," said Rev. Tom Pelton. "He was everything that he has been made out to be. He was a fine young man."

Martinez's family pleaded with any individuals who might have information about the shooting to come forward.

"Come forward and help us find us this individual who is making me bury my son today," said Martinez's father, Ricardo.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
