Microsoft Patch Causing Lockups

For Windows XP users.

Today I discovered why the computer was behaving badly (especialy when I was right clicking on the desktop). My son was complaining of locks up when using Access. Using the task manager I discovered a new peogram verclsid.exe. I ended it solved the "problem" . The program came with a recent Security Update. I uninstalled the security update and cancelled the automatic installing of updates.

To uninstall the update go to control panel -> add/remove programs, check the box "Show updates" (at the right top of the screen) , look for KB908531 and chose to remove it.

Was this only with Access? I have it too, installed on 4/13...but I haven't experienced any problems yet.

Not only with Access. It was because Access that I started to look into it. Microsoft claims it is because HP software (cameras, scanners - I have those , but they say it is because of the Share to Web programs - but I disabled them). In some forums I googled, people say that the update crashed several computers in their homes. Others, blocked verclsid with their Firewall, but then IE would not load.

I haven't deleted it yet, but in your opinion, should I?

Thanks again

Only if you experience troubles. Microsoft insists that it is a very important security patch and should be kept. They also offer a way to correct the registry - for the suicidal inclined ones.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I did have some problems after installing the latest updates. Explorer windows, after having been closed, would not disappear from the task bar. It must probably have been the .NET framework 1.1 update which I also installed, because the .NET service pack I installed afterwards solved the problems. (I do have a HP scanner-printer combination, btw).

I'm not sure if it is in any way related, but if you had these problems, the .NET update might help (it can't hurt to install it anyway).
