Netflix Is it just me, or does it seem a little much to patent such a straightforward business model as this? I mean come on, this kind of thing isn't exactly rocket science, or am I just an idiot? |

I read the trade magazines of the video business, since I own video stores. Netflix may be popular among some here, but the truth is they are a nasty company. The CEO is on record as saying his single biggest goal is to put the B&M video business under. Blockbuster being the biggest B&M chain, they are actively working to knock them off, not compete. Netflix knows two things - they are flush with cash, and Blockbuster is on the ropes. They know that Blockbuster had its internet business going before Netflix even came about, so if anyone is infringing on another's business model its Netflix. However, Blockbuster didn't think to patent what ultimately (in my opinion) cannot be enforced. Therefore, Netflix can claim to hold the rights to the business model. Netflix is gambling on the hope that Blockbuster can't finance the fight Netflix has picked, and that Blockbuster will go under before any ruling might come about that deems Netflix's patents unenforceable. As for me, I'm about to open yet another store...... |

So Netflix wants to become another Microsoft. Let's hope Blockbuster fight and win. Personally, I'd rather get movies from a rental store - if I watch a movie it tends to be a snap decision & Mrs. D'Oh can't predict what she'll want to watch next, so the Netflix model isn't much good to me. |
