Does anyone know what the uni. of california and illinois are like?

Choose MIT! It's just like England here - the people are rude, the weather's crappy, the politicians are alcoholics. It's great.

What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Illinois seems to be getting short shrift here.

Both are systems -- not just one campus. The "original" UC is Berkeley, but now they have campuses all over - UCLA is the biggest and most well endowed (though you'd think the one in Silicone Valley would be :rimshot: ).

Likewise, University of Illinois has the main campus (IIRC) in Champaign-Urbana, which is in the middle of the wheat fields, and campuses in Springfield  and Chicago :excited: .

What particular schools are you considering?

The prospectus doesn't specify which schools so i don't know. I'll email them and find out.

What IT said, with respect to the University of California. It's a big state, with different campuses in wildly different locations. Some of them are the armpit of the universe; others are stunningly gorgeous. Some are among the best schools in the world; others, put charitably, are not. So it all depends on which one.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Is this intended to be a party or a real study semester abroad. In California, there's Livermore and in Illinois there's Argonne. If they're involved, there's serious physics being done. You mentioned CERN, MP, and that's certainly cutting edge, but I have no idea how that ties into Paris.

Or there's California University of Pennsylvania (no kidding, We also have an Indiana University of Pennsylvania).

Just noticed your link to the affiliated European schools. I'd think about Grenoble. Also, I know a student at Padova (astronomy major) who is possibly about to begin a study-abroad year through Erasmus in Tenerife. She could possibly have some valuable advice.

No - not a party, i'll be working there for a year. And Paris does have some quite strong influencial ties in the field of physics, there's the large chemistry and physics industrial research centre in the middle of Paris and the departmentsof all of th euniversities are very much cutting edge. Plus, having the oppurtunity to learn the language would benefit greatly for where i might need it later.

But then... am i missing out on a huge oppurtunity, by passing up the chance to study in California for a year with no tuition fees at all?

sigh

Too many decisions!!!

If you are thinking of UC-Berkeley or Stanford for physics or maths, then I could hook you up with a whole network of great friends...

That's quite an offer for two outstanding schools for physics and math, especially Stanford. Then there's Cal Tech.
