Erotic thrillers lose steam at box office Paul Verhoeven, director of the first "Basic Instinct" (which scored $353 million worldwide) as well as the widely ridiculed "Showgirls" (now regarded as something of a camp classic), attributes the genre's demise to the current American political climate. "Anything that is erotic has been banned in the United States," said the Dutch native. "Look at the people at the top (of the government). We are living under a government that is constantly hammering out Christian values. And Christianity and sex have never been good friends." Scribe Nicholas Meyer, who was an uncredited writer on 1987's seminal sex-fueled cautionary tale "Fatal Attraction," agrees, noting that the genre's downfall coincides with the ascent of the conservative political movement. "We're in a big puritanical mode," he said. "Now, it's like the McCarthy era, except it's not 'Are you a communist?' but 'Have you ever put sex in a movie?"' |

yeah...that puritan thing...it's permeating all the kids at the highschool where I teach. I know that's right  make a sh!tty movie, blame it on me (American, Christian, conservative...hell...everything else is my fault, why not this Bozo's inability to market the aging **** of Sharon Stone) One correction though...I am Christian and me and sex...we are VERY good friends. |

I first saw Basic Instinct at a small gathering of close friends when I was about 17. I have VERY fond memories of that movie. Would I go see the sequel? Hell no. It has nothing to do with the prudish climate of the current US government, and everything to do with the fact that the movie looks absolutely horrid. |

Paul Verhoeven didn't blame the critical "success" of Showgirls on the culture of America, did he? (That's the only movie I've seen where I've said, out loud, "Oh no, not another naked woman.) |

He must be unaware of young women's apparel in this country, of late. I am so disgusted with almost uniform-like combination of low slung pants and tops that are five sizes too small, so that every young woman's (and school age girl's!) pubic bones (if they're thin) or spare tires (if they're not) are exposed. Not to mention the latest profusion of summer tops that look like negligee pieces from Victoria's Secret that barely cover the nipples - and I'm talking outwear here, not under wear. Gawd! Just today I was waiting in my car for my fish filet at BK when I saw a middle aged woman and her youngish (teens/early 20s) daughter sit down. The girl was quite chubby but that didn't stop her from pouring her derriere into an extremely tight pair of low slung jeans. She utterly strained as she went to sit down (no doubt, there were points undergoing extreme stress). When she finally got herself plunked, out pops the string from her panities, which she started duly tugging at, and up popped her too-tight shirt! WAAAY more than I wanted to see! If this is prudish, I'd hate to see what modesty looks like. |

Yep, don't know what made me sicker. The sight of that, or the fact that I was at BK.

On a more serious note, JF just made me aware of a song that my daughter's friends are all singing (they're in 5th grade). It's called My Hump. Here's a link: My Hump? I'm so glad we don't have cable, but it seems you just can't escape this stuff. Where's it gonna end - kid porn aimed at elementary students? |

I think he's right about erotica dying, but blaming Bush is silly. What's killing erotica is crappy movies like Basic Instinct, and dumb videos like the one quoted. They're about as erotic as earwax. Erotic implies some degree of subtlety. I'm sorry, but showing policemen your hamster is not erotic. Killing people with an icepick is a huge turn-on in our house, but it's a minority kink, I feel, outside of the Trotsky household. Mmmmm......earwax. Oh, where was I? |
