No I don't. I like having the CD's so I don't do it legally, and I don't like the thought of piracy because I'm such a lovely honest person.

No. I buy CDs. Of course, not owning an ipod, or mp3 player may have something to do with this ^_^

Don't think I would download illegally though. That just seems wrong.

I did in college, when every student had audiogalaxzy, imesh, bearshare, kazaa, napster, or another P2P downloading program running 24/7. I kid you not...almost every student would make a list of songs to download, and would start them in queue and then go off to class. :P

Anyway, since those days, anytime I'm looking for a song, I usually just download them from a cheap downloading web site...legally!

I also transferred all of my CD music into mp3s so I can listen to them on my computer now....

89 what percentage of those students paid for the music?

I'd say little to none, kenny.

Here's the problems with downloading music:
1. Are you looking for an entire album? If you are, then that's kind of hard to do unless you use something hardcore like eMule (which recently got pinched). So good luck getting albums.

2. Mp3's, by nature and definition, do not sound as good as CD's. They're not supposed to; they're COMPRESSED music files. Unless you're trying to get a book on tape or something, they will indeed sound worse, every time. Some of them are just downright horrible.

3. It's up to the individual's discretion; you download a song, and there's no guarentee the actual song will match up with how it's labeled.

4. Trojans, virii, spyware, oh my. Some of the programs and files used out there in file sharing land are just FILTHY with this stuff.

5. Hardcore illegal. They're really cracking down, and, well, it's against the law anyway.

Yeah, the age of illegal downloading seems to be at an end, which is just as well.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

But dude, music is free, man. It should be like air, you know, the air we breathe. Don't let The Man tax you for the sounds, like, it's like, well, like, it's really just like Jesus. Turn the moneylenders out of the bazaar, man, and fill all the shelves with sounds, man. Yeaaaaahhhh.

Multiple points for a cross-thread outside-coffee-room environment quote!!!

Kenny, none.

Now that iTunes is out, people use that or subscribe to napster. I got www.allofmp3.com whenever I rarely need to purchase music.

Also, they are cracking down and it's slowing down, but as long as you're not sharing, you're likely not to get caught or punished. I'm sure much downloading still happens on campus, but not near the level it was in 2000 when I was a freshman.

ive posted on this before...although i dont want to make a big case for illegal downloading, this study out of harvard has made considerable waves in the music industry.

turns out that file sharing doesnt have any impact on music sales..

Professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee and co-author Koleman Strumpf floored the disbelieving music industry with their findings that illegal music downloads don’t hurt CD sales.

link

in fact, another study showed that file sharing actually increases sales...

link

and so...do as u will, but if u do download, u r probably not costing the recording industry too much.

I download and if I like it, I buy it. Usually I delete it because the vast majority of it is rubbish but I do like having the physical medium. Try before you buy is a great system because it's actually fair. No wonder the music industry hasn't warmly embraced this particular business model...

I recently started using iTunes. It came pre-loaded on my computer that I purchased last summer. I wanted to download a list of favorite pop/rock songs. Yes, I paid $.99 per download which made a 70 minute CD equivalent to about $18!!. I read this morning in the paper that Apple is about to start a fight with record labels that want to charge more per download depending on the song. I hope the $.99 fee can remain.

Well, I would think that if you're not paying for it, and if it's not coming directly off of the artist's or the label's website, then yes, it is illegal.

But we won't ask for details, MP

Back in college I downloaded from one of those non-paying sites. I used it mostly as a way to discover new artists. Kind of like how you can go to Amazon and listen to music clips- only I'd have the whole song.

If I liked the songs, I would go out and buy the album and delete the songs from my computer. It would be too much hassle to download all the songs, b/c I get music for albums, not for singles. Sometimes, though, I'd download songs b/c I just wanted one or two songs from the artist. I wasn't going to buy the whole album b/c I didn't like it enough. Is this unfair to the artist? Maybe. But it sure is hard to avoid the temptation of free music when it's there in ample supply and you have 24 hr. campus connection.

I don't download anymore b/c it gets really addicting, and is very time consuming, and yes, b/c I care about supporting the artists!

This was definitely true for me. Listening to 30 second clips wasn't always enough to make me buy a CD. Downloading whole songs, I was able to have them on my computer, play them a couple times, let them sink in. I became hooked. I discovered SO many new artists through downloading songs. I bought MANY cd's in my downloading stage.

I'd say it depends on the individual, though. A lot of people are just out to get one or two songs from an artist, usually just whatever the radio hits are. In this case, I would think downloading would take the place of these people buying CDs.

Exactly! Too many of the popular artists don't have enough good songs to fill an entire album!

Actually, I have to admit I do get some of my music without paying for it. I dress up in black, put on a balaclava helmet, and raid the local CD shop armed with a high-velocity water pistol containing skunk-urine (it's amazing how much one can yield if squeezed). I then smash the window, rush in, grab as many CD's as I can, irrespective of musical content if I'm honest, and rush home.

Are there any sufficiently qualified lawyers here who would know if this is illegal? I'm a little concerned that I've been a bit cruel to the skunk.
