Piggy banks with no plug or anything to safely pull your change out (i.e., breaking the pig) are the stupidest invention on earth. This is something Douglas Adams would invent if he came around a little sooner. As a kid, I remember I had two piggy banks. One was a real cool ceramic pig, with a cork for a nose; makes it real easy to grab the change inside for a quick run to the comic book store. I had that thing for about 15 years until it fell off my top cabinet, full of change, and smashed into a billion pieces. The second one was all glass, so you could see how much change you had in there. But, this was a one time use only kind of bank; it only had the small slot on top for putting in the change; you had to break the bank to get it out! And so what happens when you break the bank? You use the money you've been saving to buy a new piggy bank!!! I mean, that's just stupid. I thought of this when I was half-asleep in the shower this morning, so I apologize for the nonsense. It is true, though. |

Yup, I'm all for the corked piggy. When I used a piggy bank, I liked to periodically take out my change and count it up.* It was an exciting day when it started to total above 3 bucks! *This was the age before Nintendo, of course. |

I hate the ones you have to break. We have a big crayola crayon one that you can remove the pointy end and just get the change out of. |

Ok, you forced me to explain. Nintendo is indeed awesome, no question there. But my rant is, My allowance as a kid was 2 bucks every week. I'd spend a dollar a month on a new comic book, if one looked interesting enough, but other than that, I'd SAVE SAVE SAVE. Nintendo cartridges cost anywhere from 30 to 50 bucks back then, I remember. So you tell me just how long you'd have to wait to buy one, saving a dollar a week. And then I went to college. I learned about the internet, and about emulators and roms. I remember as a kid, saving an entire summer (and then some) to buy MegaMan 2. In college, I downloaded it for free in under 2 minutes. That's just crap. |

Ah, yes, I can see why none of you are millionaires. You wasted your money on piggybanks. I, in contrast, poked a hole in the lid of an empty jar with my jack knife to make a temporary repository for liquid assets. Simply unscrewing the lid allowed easy access to my deposits. Big Al |

Aqua, although I do share your sentiments regarding the Nintendo issue... ...I STRONGLY disagree with your stance on the piggy bank. What is the point of a piggy bank if you can open it? That's the whole POINT of the piggy bank...so that you save a few coins here and there, and since you're not allowed to touch it, it grows and you save alot. After a while, you finally get to break it open and have some fun! LONG LIVE THE UN-HOLEY PIGGY BANK!!!!!! |

Well, to re-state, my beef with the unholey piggy bank is that once broken, you'd have to spend all (or most) of the money you saved IN the piggy bank to buy another one with the same crappy design. The only way out of this vicious cycle is to a) buy one with a cork or something or b) go Big Al's route and just use something you already have (which is probably best). |

I see what you're saying Aqua, and it makes sense...if it's all predicated on the fact that you'll buy another piggy bank. Actually, when I was a kid, I got my age in allowance per month. I had a small cube thin-steel combination safe. Of course, once my brothers found out that you didn't need to know the combo, but just turn the dial to the right about 5 times until it opened...my saving stopped.

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. | |

By making the piggybank a one time use item -- a "disposable" -- it greatly increases the market for return customers and more sales. It is one of the most brilliant marketing ploys ever invented. The genius of capitalist innovation at its finest. |
