Anti-penny activists argue the penny has become worthless and is not cost - effective to produce.
They also believe that rounding purchases to the nearest nickel is the answer.
However, this means a two-liter Diet Coke now costs $1 instead of 99 cents. I fail to see how this is more cost effective for consumers.

Some country (I think maybe it was in Scandanavia) got rid of their equivalent of the penny The total purchase price of whatever you bought was rounded up or down.

For example, if your grocery bill ended up to be $21.32, you paid $21.30. If it was $21.33, you paid $21.35.

If the law of averages hold true, half the time you would round up and the other half, round down.

I think they should get rid of the penny. (However, having say that, I still will pick up any I see lying on the ground. :) )

Yes to the original question; because while they might not be today, I remember days when every penny was precious - and who knows, those days may return...

No, I don't pick up pennies. Maybe dimes, probably quarters, for sure loonies and twoonies.

I put all my pennies (nickels too) in an old jam jar we keep by the phone........all goes to Unicef on Halloween (we get between 200-300 kids at our door).

I think every store I go into has a 'take a penny/leave a penny' dish by the cash register. Seems to work well.

Okay: I wouldn't care if it was near worthless, if MY national currency used such great names for legal tender, you BET I'd pick it up! Then I could walk around, pull the stuff out of my pockets, and say "look how many loonies I have! See, look! LOONIES!"

Sue,

The loonie is really quite attractive.

If I send you 72 pennies, will you send me a loonie? ;)

Actually, put me down for a 2-dollar loonie! The two-metal coins always look awesome (the u.s. unfortunatley doesn't have any), and it has a BEAR on the front! Bears are aw35om3!

There's an old saying - "take care of the pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves". So, I not only pick up the penny, I keep hunting until I find another one. There's always another one.....

When I was younger I picked up some right old loonies, I can tell you. I never managed a twoonie, though I often thought about the possibility.

A good friend of mine's grandmother started a "tradition" many years ago. She and her husband hated carrying around change, so they put ALL of their change at the end of the day in a piggy bank for my friend (an only grandchild). At Christmas, along with his gifts, he would get the piggy bank. When he was in university, after the loonie and toonie were both out, this usually amounted to several hundred dollars. Once he was married, they split the loot between him and his wife, and then after their daughter was born, it all went to her.

As for pennies, I don't pick them up, but I do toss them in a piggy bank. Liam loves playing with change, though, so I have a feeling that I've lost more in couch cushions, sandboxes, and on the street than I've actually saved.

I toss pennies on the ground.  I despise them.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm the one throwing all these pennies on the ground that you are all picking up.

I would pick up a quarter, though. The most I've ever found was a $5.

 geez, you're right Riley, I just posted the first loonie that came up in a google search, didn't spend much time looking at it. But that's not right, is it?! Fake! Someone's making fake loonies! Maybe it's a chocolate or something.

You want to know a funny story?

My grandmother (mom's mom) always collected so-called "lucky money" that she found on the street. My parents payed for their marriage license with some of this lucky money. Several of my mom's cousins payed for their marriage licenses with this lucky money. My grandmother found so much of it!

The really funny story is that when my parents went to get their license, they got to the office 5 minutes before closing time. They had forgotten to get the lucky money from my grandmother, so they convinced the clerk to stay after-hours a little bit, ran home, and came back with a bag full of pennies and nickels and dimes and quarters. :P

I don't even pick them up if I accidentally drop them. If I drop a quarter, I'll pick it up.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I'd love to see a study on this (yep, science to kill the fun once again).

Somehow simulate how much change you could reasonably acquire if you picked up EVERYTHING you saw on the ground for one year.

And then compare this to the rise in cost of living, inflation, gas prices, etc., and see if it really would make any kind of a dent.

I'm guessing it wouldn't make much of a dent at all, unless you melted all the change down and re-cast it as a hammer.

I'll do it.

Seriously, it could be fun. Plus I agree the results would be interesting. Plus at the end of the year I'd have a bunch of cash.
