The Great Coffee-Room Cross-Country Road Trip; ...should we?

Aqua's out right now, so I haven't asked him, but I'm thinking this summer, he and I might take a cross-country road trip, just for fun. Take a week off and travel from DC to Pittsburgh, to Ohio, to Chicago, to Seattle, to California, to the Grand Canyon, to Kansas City, to Tennessee, and then back to DC.

This path is inspired by a combo of cities and coffee room members.

I've never been to any of those places besides Pitts, Ohio, and Chicago...all briefly, and all many years ago.

Is this even viable in a week? Should we rent a car? Am I out of my mind?

89th - I don't think you could do it in a week. We took 3 weeks last summer and did a loop to the East Coast from Colorado. We had very few stops where we spent more than a couple nights. Coast to Coast will probably take you 4-5 nights just driving it straight through with some pretty full days driving (one way) and I assume you'll probably want to make some stops along the way.

Well, this is always a possibility, 89th! But go for it! I have no idea of the geography involved, but do what you can. Road trips are priceless. Especially when you're young. GO!

Just do it.

We'd love to meet you!

Trains are cool to for covering long distances but still seeing something.
Then rent cars in certain places.

The train idea aint bad!! And we'd love to meet you too! :)

I think the time factor is a problem though...I wouldn't want to take more than a week off and don't think we could fit it in.

ALTHOUGH...(light bulb above head!), we could FLY to the west coast and drive back! :hat:

Fly Jet Blue Washinton DC Dulles, to Long Beach California.

Non-stop, one way $144.

I'll pick you up at the airport in the hybrid.
But it may take half of your week to drive back to the house a mile away. :lol2:

I can vouch for this!
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

If you have a week you may onlhy want to do the east-of-the-mississippi tour. I'm assuming you want to spend part of a day and an evening in those places you mentioned. That would be highly doable in a week, and not to strenuous.

THen next year fly to the west coast, rent a car, and do it there.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Do the math.

I-40 from NC to Los Angeles is 2,555 miles. A reasonable estimate.

If you're driving 75 mph the whole way, it will take you 53 hours, driving non-stop.

But you will need to stop a bit, right?

So let's say 10 bathroom breaks, 10 minutes each
6 fast food drive-through food breaks, 15 minutes each (because they always take forever and there are always long lines on the ones just off the interstates)
7 stops for gas (assuming 25 mpg, 12 gal tank, I think)

It's now about 58 hours. Plus everyone knows that as soon as you hit the Riverside overpass you'll only be able to go about 30 mph from there on. Add another 2 hours, minimum. And somewhere along this 58 hour stretch, you'll catch a few rush hours. Add another 3 hours.

OK, 63 hours plus or minus, driving time alone, on I-40. One way.

I don't think it's possible. :D

But in case I'm wrong, let me know and I'll have some Jolt and doughnuts ready to toss in through your car window. We can chat! :)

Here's my suggestion, 89th. Make a circle trip up through NY, Ontario, and Michigan to Chi-town and then back through Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Much more doable in a week and leaves some time to stop places. Half the fun of a road trip for me is stopping when I see something interesting along the road or on the map.

Actually you said a mouthful there.

I'll bet that EVERYONE here would like me in person.
I fact I'm sure of this, if they don't hold against me the crap I write, that is. :P

This forum is the opportunity to jump on bandwagons or play devil's advocate, push the limits, so to speak.

I think I have met more people in person than anyone else here.
I haven't gotten a single black eye yet.

Plus meeting people takes trust - on both parts.
Trust is a gift we give each other and it means a lot.
