I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I caught about 15 minutes last night. The first girl - heavy-set black girl sang some Dinah Washington - she was amazing. I closed my eyes and had no idea that she was an amateur. Powerful, on pitch, a tremedous stage presence, and she was beautiful.

I also saw some bald guy sing "I Walk the Line" in a way that Johnny Cash, I'm sure, never imagined. It was great. Slow, soulful and full of pathos. He owned the song.

From the little bits I saw tonight, it seems that the talent is much, much higher than in years past, and any of them could be professionals (with 1 or 2 exceptions - who's the geeky looking kid?)
Didn't see anything else.

If they focused more on those type of people, I think I might check it out now and then. But they seem to dwell more on the fantastically crappy acts. It seems like a circus, from the clips I've seen. Most of the people I've talked to who watch it do so for a good laugh.

who's the geeky looking kid?

That's Chicken Little... :D Kevin Kovais.

Posted ImagePosted Image Looks just like him, right?

The bald guy is the odds on favorite at this point. 9 of the 11 remaining could win it, they are that good. Plays and I watch it. She's rooting for Taylor Hicks, the premature gray haired guy. He is a good performer/entertainer, not the best singer in the group, but could win it.

The thing that's good (and bad) about Idol is that it's frequently not about talent, singing ability, etc. It's about being a "star." That's what the show promotes, and all the 11 and 12 year olds who text 50 votes in over two hours are the power that feed that mentality.

Granted, there's something to be said for "star power," and Hicks has it, IMNSHO. So do others, such as Aiken did - even though he lost.

I'll never understand why some others in the past won, however.

IMHO Elliot Yamin is the most talented as far as having the best voice. I've been watching it religiously this year and have even voted with my Cingular cell phone. I'm glad Chicken Little has been voted off the island so to speak. As much as I like him there's just too much talent going on this year to have him stick around.

I believe when it's all said and done it will be between

Ace, Chris
Kelly and
Taylor

Yeah, I confess I'm watching it too. :leaving:
I also think there really are some great singers this time around. The bald guy's version of 'I Walk the Line' was really impressive, I agree George. And I like Taylor Hicks too; something very 'real' about these two. I get a kick out of the blonde country girl....Pickles or something? A little silly perhaps, but strikes me as an honest to goodness type. I have watched the show in bits, in past years, mostly for the sport of laughing at the silliness. But this year, I think they've found some actual talent.

There's a lot of local interest in Elliot because he's from Richmond. I agree he's got a great voice, but he's a little on the trollish side to make it all the way and his on screen personality (or lack of) needs work if he's going to make it to the top 5.

RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH

Now it's time to get serious.

It started with thousands cramming football stadiums from Colorado to Massachusetts, hoping for a few minutes of air time on TV or simply sharing air with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and even the perpetually daffy Paula Abdul.

Then came the first cut to pockets of males and females. But this is when "American Idol" gets good.

The final 10 - performing songs of the 21st century tonight at 8 on Fox - whittled down from 24 semifinalists. These are the ones who will receive ubiquitous exposure this summer, flaunting their blossoming talents on the money magnet "American Idol" tour and getting to play pop star for a couple of months.

Even the nine who don't score the $1 million recording contract with Simon Cowell's label, 19 Entertainment, which he controls with "Idol" co-producer Simon Fuller, should manage a career that surpasses their pre-"Idol" lives of working at car dealerships or as sales clerks. Witness Amy Adams, finalist No. 10 from 2004, who landed in the touring version of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" last year.

Of course, there are always the Justin Guarinis of the competition, too. But let's not ruin the moment.

This year's "Idol" won't be crowned until May 24, which leaves plenty of time for speculating and arguing. So we've put on our Vegas oddsmaker caps and given the final 10 a thorough inspection - and yes, that includes some criticism of our Virginia guys.

Let the debate begin.

1.) Chris Daughtry . . . Posted Image
Age: 26
From: McLeansville, N.C. (graduated from Fluvanna High School, parents live in Kents Store)

Most resembles: Mini Vin Diesel

Likely career after the boot: That's assuming he gets the boot. In that unlikely case, Daughtry is a lock as a rock frontman (Fuel, perhaps, if they're still looking) or a solo star of Clay Aiken magnitude

What we like: Those ab-hugging, long-sleeved T-shirts, expertly tucked in the front of his jeans. The guy has a look and the supreme confidence to match

What we don't like: One-dimensional, turns every song into a rocker, tries to melt the camera with his stares

Best songs to attempt tonight: U2's "Beautiful Day" or Nickelback's "Photograph"

Odds of winning: 2-1

Random Web quote: "Chris, the champion of covering covers. I think he has a great future in a cover band! Beats selling auto parts."

2.) Mandisa. . . Posted Image (Hey, where's her last name? She's not a diva yet. ;) )
Age: 29
From: Antioch, Tenn.

Most resembles: Aretha Franklin circa 1964

Likely career after the boot: If she doesn't out-wail Chris for the "Idol" crown, Mandisa still has no worries. Music needs a big voice that can tackle gospel and soul, and she could be its savior

What we like: The girl has some serious pipes and commands your attention even if you don't like her singing style; also genial and funny

What we don't like: Tendency to oversing

Best songs to attempt tonight: Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" or Alicia Keys' "A Woman's Worth"

Odds of winning: 3-1

3.) Taylor Hicks . . . Posted Image
Age: 29
From: Birmingham, Ala.

Most resembles: Jay Leno (he seems to think George Clooney, but let's get real)

Likely career after the boot: Though the Taylor groundswell is palpable, we'll be surprised if it isn't back to the bars and those Bob Seger covers

What we like: An obviously fun guy who takes the judges' comments seriously; an interesting, distinctive voice

What we don't like: Must. Stop. Dancing.

Best songs to attempt tonight: Train's "Drops of Jupiter" or Matchbox Twenty's "If You're Gone"

Odds of winning: 4-1

Random Web quote: "Taylor's gonna be around a while, unless he REALLY screws up. And given how well he's adjusting his game, he's clearly trying to tone down some of his quirks, and he's found a good look."

4.) Elliott Yamin . . . Posted Image
Age: 27
From: Richmond, Va.

Most resembles: Adam Sandler after a bad hair-dye incident

Likely career after the boot: It would be a pity if his mellifluous voice were ignored in the pro world, so look for producers like judge Randy Jackson to snap him up for studio session work

What we like: His versatility, warm voice and infectious enthusiasm about being in the competition

What we don't like: Lack of on-stage allure, inability to sell a song with personality

Best songs to attempt tonight: Maroon 5's "This Love" or Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be"

Odds of winning: 6-1

Random Web quote: "Good singer but looks like he should be working at an Amish farm. Not much charisma, not A.I. material."

5.) Katharine McPhee . . . Posted Image
Age: 21
From: Los Angeles, Calif.

Most resembles: Catherine Zeta-Jones in "Chicago"

Likely career after the boot: Lounge singer or spokesperson for overpriced shampoo

What we like: Her constant growth, an impressive display of poise and articulateness

What we don't like: A misplaced sense of importance (was it really necessary to embarrass Simon Cowell, the only opinion that matters, by throwing a hissy fit because he forgot her name earlier in the day?); that whole "McFever" thing

Best songs to attempt tonight: Kelly Clarkson's "Miss Independent" or Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why"

Odds of winning: 8-1

6.) Kellie Pickler . . . Posted Image
Age: 19
From: Albemarle, N.C.

Most resembles: Cathy Baker from "Hee Haw"

Likely careers after the boot: Local TV commercials hawking "Pickler's Pickles"

What we like: She's not really a minx, despite Cowell's crush, but her perkiness makes her tolerable

What we don't like: That fake dumb blonde act; a strained voice masked by said perkiness

Best songs to attempt tonight: Jessica Simpson's "With You" or the Dixie Chicks' version of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide"

Odds of winning: 10-1

7.) Ace Young . . . Posted Image
Age: 25
From: Denver, Colo.

Most resembles: John Travolta in "Welcome Back Kotter"

Likely career after the boot: Professional red carpet hanger-on

What we like: We get it, Bambi. You're cute

What we don't like: Can't sing

Best songs to attempt tonight: James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" or Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River"

Odds of winning: 12-1

Random Web quote: "I like Ace, but I think he does better when he's not trying so hard. I thought he was awesome when he did "Father Figure," but the past few weeks he's been overworking the falsetto thing."

8.) Paris Bennett . . . Posted Image
Age: 17
From: Fayetteville, Ga.

Most resembles: Kim Fields on "The Facts of Life"

Likely career after the boot: A contender for a Disney-esque TV show; probably happiest back in the church choir

What we like: Refreshingly disparate song choices ("Wind Beneath My Wings," "Conga," "Fever"), a voice that seemingly expands each week

What we don't like: Not as forgettable as Lisa Tucker, but still not a standout. Needs more seasoning

Best songs to attempt tonight: Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" or Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful"

Odds of winning: 15-1

9.) Lisa Tucker . . . Posted Image
Age: 16
From: Anaheim, Calif.

Most resembles: What? There's a contestant named Lisa on the show?

Likely career after the boot: A dash for representation to hook her up with a Raven Simone-like show

What we like: Her cluelessness about her utter mediocrity is somewhat endearing

What we don't like: That she actually thinks she's "Idol" material. Send this one back to the community theater chorus

Best songs to attempt tonight: Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" or, oh you know, it just doesn't matter because she'll be gone this week

Odds of winning: 25-1

10.) Bucky Covington . . . Posted Image
Age: 28
From: Rockingham, N.C.

Most resembles: Jessica Simpson dressed as Kid Rock

Likely career after the boot: Performing at the Rockingham State Fair this summer as the "big attraction"

What we like: Takes criticism well, possesses a dopey charm

What we don't like: Flat, uninspired singing, unfortunate hair

Best songs to attempt tonight: Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying" or Keith Urban's "You'll Think of Me"

Odds of winning: 30-1

Random Web quote: "The very first one who should have been gone was 'Sucky Bucky.' He is one of the worst singers I have ever heard. You people must be tone deaf to think he is good."

Chris is my favorite. Hicks is highly entertaining but listen to his voice rather than watching him and I think you’ll hear his limitations as a successful recording artist. Yamin is probably the most sophisticated singer of all, but this is American Idol, not an audition for an after-hours Jazz club.

Mandisa has the best set of pipes but not sure she has a wide enough repertoire range. Same possible problem for Paris. Katherine McPhee is drop dead beautiful but her voice doesn’t measure up to the top talent in this year’s group. My take on Pickler and Covington? If Hee Haw returns, they might have a career.

I totally agree Frank. Chris certainly has a better voice,(and Yamin's is the best) and if the recording industry worked solely on singing talent, Yamin should win.

I just like Taylor. I smile when he comes on; and am entertained. Maybe it's the sexy grey hair. :hat:

Taylor is the favorite of everyone in my family but me. He's my second favorite. I just see Chris as the epitome of what American Idol is supposed to be.

But if you asked me and almost everyone else i know who they look forward to most, it's Taylor. The guy has charisma. Don't you just love his Ray Charles twitch?

I listened to part of it and I'll come back later to listen to the rest. But here's my problem with him as i hear on that recording. He's sort of a blend of Ray Charles and Joe Cocker, two of my all time favorites. And, to my ears, he doesn't measure up to that kind of company. His voice is not nearly as heavy as Charles and he doesn't have that singular quality of Cocker's. But, hey, different strokes as they say. Maybe Chris would have the same problem if I compared him to some Rock immortals.
