Finally
(always loved that word - "hooligan." My grandmother (born in Russia in 1897) used it all the time.)

Hamburg building temporary Cup hooligan jail

HAMBURG, Germany -- A special temporary jail is being built to detain hooligans during the World Cup for up to two weeks.

The facility will be able to hold up to 150 prisoners with the law allowing them to be held for two weeks in extreme cases, police spokesman Marco Haase said Tuesday.

Cells will be outfitted like those in Hamburg's main police station but will be specifically for people who have been "temporarily taken into custody" in order to avert violence.

"We want a peaceful World Cup and we hope that these rooms aren't going to be necessary," Haase said.

The jail is expected to cost $4.6 million as part of the $10.7 million security budget for the city.

Five of the 64 World Cup games are to be played in Hamburg, where the United States team is staying.

The World Cup runs from June 9 to July 9.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

(for the first 2 weeks)

They should put all the cells in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, and Cologne - the cities where the English team is playing.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

What's that old joke, Hell is where all the police are German, and the sports fans are English? Something like that at least.

Better than the US, I'd wager.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

England is in a much easier group. They would not want to have Italy and Czech Republic in the first round.

Germany just beat US 4-1. US had only about half of their good players though.

I confidently predict that England will beat Brazil in the final by a score of 5-1.

Alternatively, on planet earth...

England will do what they always do. They'll look promising, probably get through to the semis and then get kicked out by a good team. The British press will then go nuts, demanding Eriksson's head on a platter, and after a couple of weeks everyone will notice that the earth still turns, and it'll all be over for another 4 years.
