Like most of the people on PW who either couldn't or wouldn't open the numerous links, I didn't bother either. However, the answer to your question "How in the world does Beethoven go from this at the beginning of the 1st movement?" is most likely thematic development. At least that's what he usually does. |

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

It's more than just thematic development. These ideas are SOOOOO contrasting. Apparantly, the links worked for iamcanadian, because he knew which sonata I was talking about. Maybe shosti got the links to work, too. (and I imagine that others might have been able to listen to them, too, but just didn't comment - people do that a lot) In fact, only one person commented to say that the links didn't work for him. So maybe the links DID work for most people? I don't know. The links will definately work if you open them up in iTunes. (by the way, all of the links except for one are less than 35 seconds long (some are only 10 seconds long), so it's not like I'm sending you an hour of music to listen to!) |

Iamcanadian helped me change the links to mp3s, so they should work for most people now. |

Sam, Sorry about being a little snotty. It seemed like it would be an interesting question, and then I couldn't open the links. Now that I know you're talking about Beethoven op. 111: Yes. very interesting piece. It's a set of variations, which is really the essence of thematic development - outside of the sonata allegro. Of course the ideas would be contrasting. That's the whole idea of sets of variations. Plus, Beethoven never lost an opportunity to cover a lot of emotional ground. Some people think that one variation -3rd or 4th one - is jazzy, but they miss the point. It's more like the scherzo of op. 101, and of course there's no context for jazz at that time. What he's doing from the beginning of the second movement (of op 111) to that variation is subdividing the rhythm in each subsequent variation. Great piece. One of my favorite Beethoven sonatas. |
