He most definitely *did* "own her". This woman rattled off the full list of pathological crap the loony fringe left has been obsessed with for the last 5 years - and he tore it to shreds. You can argue that he didn't use proper debate tactics all you want - he wasn't in a debate. You can talk about his lack of speaking skills - but he spoke straight and to the point, and he hit her points dead on the money. And now the points this fool of a woman who should have been sent out to pasture years ago brought up are being talked about all over the media, and discussion is taking place showing the flaws in her attack. Score - Bush.

And poor Rick, one of the card carrying members of the loony fringe left.... "BUSH LIED!" Pardon me while I laugh my ass off at that one. Rick argues the same old worn out and totally discredited points the loony fringe left were arguing from the beginning, with nowhere to turn but to revert back to the old standard "Bush lied!" line...

Bush didn't lie, Rick. You just don't know what the truth is.

Excellent press conference. Bush should do a lot more of them.

He crushed her question with an unscripted, well spoken, organized, and logical response - a rare thing for any President now.

Talk about a left-handed compliment...

If Larry agrees with you, 89th, that's pretty solid evidence that you're dead wrong.

Or solid evidence that you're almost as far off the loony fringe left as Rick.

Yup, that's me, on the loony fringe. After all, I said I'd vote for McCain over Hilary. Yup, the loony fringe.

Saw an interesting poll today that said that when it comes to polls, Hillary is polling so badly that not only would McCain or Guiliani beat her but (sit down, Quirt!) even Cheney is polling better than she is.

I wish I could remember where I saw it. Made me laugh. It's so absurd on so many levels.

Edit: Don't be mean to Larry, he did say almost.

Quirt, if you look around, Larry's not the only one that agrees with me.

She tossed out a few liberal talking points, and Bush nailed them all.

It was a press conference, but Bush decided to answer her questions directly, and dismantled her whole premise...and did it with class too! She was totally owned.

The only reason I took a shot at Quirt is because he took a shot at me. For the most part, Quirt was reasonably balanced in his take on things, even though he still let's his ideology cloud his view. 89th has an opinion, I agree with it, but we're not alone by a long shot. The simple fact is, Helen Thomas has been going to every press conference for the last 3 years just waiting for the opportunity to launch her loony fringe smear attack at Bush. She finally got her chance, and Bush ate her lunch. And the country will be talking about it for weeks to come.

Like I said: Score: Bush.

Bush doesn't have class, and never will.

So a reporter (regardless of how long s/he has been there) asks a question of the President, in effect saying "You lied when you said this, that, and the other thing. Do you have any regrets about those statements?"

And you say Bush doesn't have class? I'm surprised he didn't pop a berry.

I don't care if you're Helen Thomas, Sam Donaldson, or whoever. The office deserves respect, and question should be asked respectfully, and not in that way. As Winters told Sobel in Band of Brothers,, "You salute the rank, not the man."

Thomas should have shown the same respect.

I took the first shot ... in this thread. In general, Larry has taken the first shot several dozen times in several dozen other threads, either at me specifically or at liberals generally. Anyone paying attention knows that.

LW,

Have you spent much time in Texas? I cannot think you have. Most people I know who don't get Bush know little of Texas and nothing of Texans. The East Coast Bush legacy was totally overriden by being brought up with the gracious, open, honest, friendly and polite nature of Texans. Not the people who moved to Dallas or Houston five years ago and bought boots, but the people who grew up out in Midland, Odessa, Abilene, Buffalo Gap. Bush is most assuredly the product of that society, and shows it in everything he does. Bush has a lot of class.. it's just a class you don't understand. I'll take his kind of class over the slick talkin' bubba that preceded him any day.

I didn't see much class between the two of them either. Just a lot of sputtering.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

What, like Bush Snr, the faux-Texan? I actually think that Snr has a lot more class than Jnr.

To equate 'Class' with geographical location is a wee bit of a generalisation, isn't it? In England, we equate it with breeding. Mostly in-breeding, as it happens.

Well anyways, despite its rare occurrence, I'm not going to cheer excitedly every time the president actually answers questions directly (or so you say; I say no he didn't), and without the use of a script. That would be called a press conference.

Approximately 200 million Americans to choose from, and a President is chosen who isn't very good at public speaking. Why?

I have to agree.

It is amazing how small an apparent Bush "victory" has to be these days to get his supporters all excited and popping the champagne.

Says a lot about how badly things are going for him, doesn't it?
