I'm glad I'm not the only one to find the book poorly written. It was a total yawner. The guy has no story telling ability at all. |

Putting aside historical and factual inaccuracies, I found the first half clever - as far as an interesting concept goes. The second half became a mediocre chase thriller. Want a good thriller? Read anything by Forsyth. |

Well yeah, I mean, it's not Ulysses, but it's a page-turner at least. Sure, the characters might not be full of depth, and the plot doesn't try too incredibly hard to explain itself, but I recognized that and was decently entertained with it. (I'd suggest that this argument could be made for Harry Potter as well, but I haven't ran XC for some years and I'm afraid the lynch mob would have no trouble catching me. )

I haven't read it, but have heard that Umberto Eco's books (might have been 'Foucault's Pendulum?) dealt with similar themes, but much better writing. Speaking of which, isn't Dan Brown being sued for plagiarism by several different authors? |

I agree, as far as the concept goes. There were some interesting character potential as well, although I am a bit tired of the rehashed Indiana Jones type of character being applied all over the place these days. |

From Mark
I combined quotes, because this brings up an interesting question. You see, I am a Harry Potter fan. I thoroughly enjoy it, not the movies, but the books. However, I also should point out that I haven't read the books, only listened to them. Now, Aqua brings up that Harry Potter wasn't well written (have you actually read them? I thought you said before that you hadn't). In all honesty, I can't say that they are or aren't as I haven't either. They only seem well written from my perspective of listening to them. However, how much of that could be a function of the story teller? Is it possible there are some books, when read aloud by a gifted story teller, that seem better than they are? It's hard to say, as if you read a book, but didn't care for it, it's doubtful that listening to it would be much better, as your perception would be tainted by your earlier exposure to it. The same applies in reverse. What do you think? |

Tom Hanks is so seriously miscast I'm thinking it's going to ruin the movie. He's too old, and doesn't look like a university professor. When they gave him long hair for the role, it just made him look like a seedy doofus. There is absolutely NO WAY I can believe Hanks: a) doing the physical running around that the professor does to escape the evil-doers; b) having enough general sex appeal to attract the hot young female lead. |

I would totally disagree that the Harry Potter books are poorly written. I do agree that the first one or two come off a bit like a 2000's Hardy Boys serial of novels, but starting with the third, and certainly through 4-6 you can seldom see someone's progression as a novelist so clearly. You have to bear in mind that these books were written to entertain both adults and children. I think she succeeds admirably on both counts, and perhaps more importantly she had produced literature that children enjoy but is not dumbed down. |

It's true, I have not read “the books”; I got through 1/3 to half of the first one, and just stopped reading it. Is this a good sample of the series in general? I dunno, but the little I did read, I didn't like.
Hmmmm. Well, take a look at jokes. There is DEFINITELY a good and bad way to tell the same joke. However, with audio versions of books, it’s hard to say since the delivery is much more rigid; all the reader can mess with, really, is inflection, accents if any, and just plain how their voice sounds. I’m sure it’s possible to have a horrible or gifted storyteller, but I dunno; with my experience in audio books, there weren’t too many frills involved, so mostly it’s up to the book itself to be interesting? Hard to say! |

Meanwhile back at the topic.... I liked the trailer, and thought the book was ok. Very interesting concepts, not as skillfully executed as it was designed. Like Crichton, the book was not so much a novel as a screenplay. I'll go see the movie. But, in my mind I keep seeing the big doofus from 'Coach' as the big albino Opus Dei penitent, which is difficult to take seriously. (I know he's not it, but that is what I see anyway) |

I'm a hard-core non-fan of that book, so I've started camping out at my home so I can be first in line to not buy tickets to the movie. |

I thought the book was really good. When I'm reading a book, it's for entertainment, a good story, and keeps you sucked in until the end. If you have a book that's hard to put down...it's a good book. |
