I Owe It All To John D'Oh

Anyone watching it? It's an interesting combination of a charming and bumbling performance. (The bit about him staring down at the seating chart and misreading the names was classic. Most Presidents don't let on that there's a seating chart right on the dais. And Helen Thomas' little dig at him near the beginning was priceless.) |

Mmmmmmm, pie!

It was also priceless when he put her in her place and showed her to be ignorant, and part of the problem. |

It was an unusual performance, 89th, because he really put himself out there and answered questions, which he does less than almost any other President in the television age. I thought he was mostly articulate, a little bumbling, he came across as forceful and committed and often charming. And he didn't limit the subject to Iraq. I thought he did very well, even though I don't agree, with his defense of the warrantless eavesdropping. But he took a few cheap shots relative to the Patriot Act. Interesting article in the WPost today, by the way, suggesting that Bush is experiencing a credibility gap because of all his (and the W-ettes') previous statements over the last few years about how well everything was going, which proved not to be true. So, whether he's right now or not, he's not being believed because his previous optimism was wholly unwarranted. |

I have to admit that I don't trust the bumbling as genuine. Reagan was loved, partly because of all his endearing gaffes, and I sometimes wonder whether this has been a lesson learned by the Bush style-councillors. |
