Today is The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The United Nations Commission for Human Rights is celebrating the day with this vile poster portraying Denmark's most famous company as racist:![]() Let me see if get this right: Cartoons of a religious figure appear in a newspaper. Riots break out because of the blasphemy. The country is deemed "racist" by the United Nations. Use one of the country's largest businesses to make the point that they dont fit in. As I said a couple of weeks ago, "Welcome to Dhimitown." =-=-=-===-=-= Oh, and a Question: What has the U.N. said or done about the Abdul Rahaman case? Answer: Nothing. |

And now they backtrack. The United Nations has removed its anti-Danish poster from its website. Now, no trace of it at all. No explanation. Here's what the company said: LEGO on Racism Poster UN's International Racism Day uses Lego block as focal point. Toy giant is extremely surprised. The UN is now linking the Danish toy giant LEGO together with racism. It happened today- on the international day on racism- that the UN's High Commission for Human Rights used as a focal point for a wide global arrangement has launched a poster with the with slogan "Racism can take may forms". Right under the slogan, which is also produced in Arabic, is a picture of a LEGO block. (Danish) Institute for Human Rights chairman professor Claus Haagen Jensen is shaken. "This is tactless and a stupidity. It's directed at when the cartoons were published, as the Jyllands-Posten pointed out. The UN human rights commission should therefore not misuse its mandate." He believes that there is reason to investigate this issue. "Is this supposed to be a little unfriendly greeting to Denmark? It is really extremely unfortunate", he said. LEGO goes to the UN LEGO is very surprised about the company's very recognizable product is being used in connection with racism. LEGO's communications chief Charlotte Simonsen explains that they will now get in touch with the UN. "This is problematic, to know that this poster should include LEGO connected with racism or as racists. We really have to wonder that the UN didn't let us know in advance when LEGO has previously worked together with the UN's Refugee Commisson on a campaign" said Ms Simonsen. Danish Peoples Party leader, Pia Kjærsgaard, finds the UN poster unacceptable. "One would have to be more than usually naive to not see that this is an outrageous insult. It is my assumption that they have tried to symbolize the Mohammed-cartoon crisis as something very Danish". She feels that this is the latest example of how the UN has over time lost its founding values. Whatever your interpretation of the idiotic poster, the U.N.'s weasely removal of it from its website today speaks unambiguous volumes. Oh, and here's the poster in Arabic:

The more voice the UN gives to bigots and just plain nasty governments, the less relevence they retain. It's very sad that they can become so obviously hijacked by people who have absolutely no right to accuse others, when they are so clearly guilty of bigotry and narrow-mindedness themselves. George, when I first saw this, I honestly thought it was satire. |

That's why I edited the title. I though that some would think that I was (moi?) being snarky(tm) again and ignore it. The UN, yesterday, claimed that there was no connection between the red object that does not fit in with the black puzzle. Today, the campaign is ... "poof!".....gone.... |

So, that lego man is praying. He can stop because he is already quite obviously sliding into home. |

I have a completely opposite read on the poster. Who's the outsider? The Lego. Who are the conformists? the black jigsaw pieces. The black jigsaw pieces are the ones not letting the lego in, not the other way around. The black jigsaw pieces are the racists. |

Yeah, see, I read it that way too! But the thing is, they're showing a lego, a danish product, in an advertizement regarding racism, just after the cartoon debaccle. Kind of a bad idea. |

That's interesting that you see it that way; I wonder if that was the intent? I see it very differently, that racism comes in all sorts of shapes, the black, conforming jigsaw pieces, but also in a totally different forms, like the lego piece. Which is a good statement to make, but using a readily indentifiable, trademark toy was really bad judgement, imo. |

If I had just seen the poster, I would not have made the connection without reading this thread. Just looking at the poster, it seems to me that they are showing two completely different shapes, and saying that racism comes in many forms. Though I suppose if you were aware that Legos were from Denmark, it would have made more sense. My bad.

Makes you wonder; how did this get past the drawing board? Don't most ad campaigns have to go through a board meeting, discussions, feedback etc? Or is that not how things work in the advertising industry? |
