If so, why?

Renting now is so cheap and easy with Netflix.

I buy movies because I'll watch the same ones over and over again. I'm also very spur of the moment when it comes to picking what I want to watch.

I'd use Netflix, and probably will when my current living situation changes, but right now I'm usually otherwise occupied in the evenings.

Yup, gonna buy Capote and South Park Season 7 on the way home tonight (oh, and Prince's new "3121" on CD).

The reason I do is because I like to have my own library. I do it for the same reason anybody collects anything, really. It's fun, I like to share movies with friends, and I like to have a big collection to pick from when I feel like watching something.

Also it's pretty cheap. $13 for a DVD to be watched on my new HDTV is much cheaper than going to a movie theater and spending $30 for just two of us.

Finally, I dislike "subscriptions" where they hit you for a fixed amount every month (e.g. cable). Same reason I don't have XM radio, or a pager or a cell phone.

I buy occassionally.

The movies I like tend to be the ones that get better with each viewing- so it just makes more sense for me to buy.

I buy movies for the same reason that I buy books, so I can view/read them when I want to by just pulling them off the shelf. Generally, they're something that I think I'll enjoy viewing again at some time or sharing with others.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I don't buy movies because I never watch them. I do buy concert DVDs.

I have had Bull Durham on DVD forever... have never watched it. But every time it is on TV I tune in. Go figure.

Lindy, I agree with you totally. Except I go to the theater AND buy it on DVD... :P

Big Al, that was going to be my answer.

It's the same reason you have books on your shelf. It's a collection of some of your favorite movies, you can watch it at the spur of the moment, share it, take it with you, etc.

Although, when I get a little older, I will probably get TiVo and netflix. I would use netflix to watch tv shows, ironically. Like watching 24, the Shield, the Amazing Race, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Sopranos, etc....I would use netflix to just watch seasons of shows quickly. :)

Yes, but very rarely. It really has to be something that I'm sure I'd want to watch more than once. I think I've got about 4. MASH, Dr. Strangelove, Shrek, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
I also have the Black Adder box set (not a movie) and plan to keep adding to this Brit comedy collection. Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, etc. This is the kind of stuff I do watch more than once; moreso than movies.
Never done the Netflix thing.

I buy kids' movies on DVD. We can watch them dozens of times.

us too, Quirt, though not as much now as we did when our kids were littler

My kids had Rocky Horror Picture Show-like routines for all the Disney movies.

Previous to NetFlix, I always bought. It wasn't always easy to get the DVD's back to Blockbuster the next day, so instead, I would buy the "pre-viewed" DVD's at $10 a pop. It actually cost less money, and I owned the movie. Plus, if you didn't like the movie, you could trade it in! Since Netflix, I don't buy as many, but there are still certain movies I want to own, so I buy them. Not just for the convenience factor, but for the extra's as well. I love all the behind the scenes, deleted scenes, etc.....stuff.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I buy them for the same reason that I buy books rather than use a library. I like owning stuff. Also, kids movies, as Quirt has said. My two have watched The Polar Express (a fantastic movie, by the way) approximately 30 times.

The only thing that I would rent is beer, although there'd have to be pretty liberally-worded return policies.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
I voted no, but I actually "rarely" buy. There are only a fw movies that I think worth seeing more than once or twice. I prefer Netflix, but I might buy The Sopranos series. I am sure that if we had kids, we would have a lot of Disney type dvds. MS loves Inspector Morse and collects the dvds.
The dogma lives loudly within me.
