Finally
Irish Catholics in a quandry about eating corned beef on St. Pat's Day, which is on a Friday this year.

Corned Beef Controversy Over; Dispensation Granted

OMAHA, Neb. -- A corned beef controversy is over in Omaha after the Catholic Church granted a special dispensation Tuesday morning.

Omaha's Ancient Order of Hibernians ordered corned beef for its annual St. Patrick's Day feed, but the Irish holiday's position on a Friday this year puts it in direct conflict with the Catholic rule to eat no meat on Lenten Fridays. The Hibernian leader said that plans for this year's event were in question without a dispensation. The Hibernians said they were hoping to get permission from Archbishop Elden Curtiss to serve and eat corned beef, and they ordered the beef expecting the dispensation to come through.

"In this day and age, there's precious little the church asks of us," said the Rev. Ryan Lewis, of the Omaha Archdiocese.

Lewis said Curtiss has granted dispensations for meat during Lent in the past, but it is not an action that groups or individuals should take for granted.

On Tuesday morning, Curtiss announced dispensation from the law of abstinence for March 17. Curtiss said Catholics who take part in the St. Patrick's Day holiday tradition should abstain from meat on March 18 instead.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Such dispensations are typical.

I never really thought of corned beef as "meat" though.

Everybody's going to be so hung over on the 18th, they won't want to eat anyway.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Ordering from this menu would make the definition seem more ambiguous than commonly thought:

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".
