I'll tell you what really gets my goat (and it happens alot here in NYC)... I'll be walking down the right side of the sidewalk (following protocol) and someone will come walking right towards me and they won't move and then they'll act like I ran into them!

I think I'm going to print myself up some little business cards with the basic rules of protocol and whenever that happens I'm going to hand over one of these cards!

Gggggrrrrrr.

EXACTLY

Let it out right then, right there, a little at a time.

Otherwise it is like holding in a fart.

This bugs me quite a bit. Sometimes I'll say to Mark as we're walking "I'm not budging, I'm not budgine, I'm not budging UNLESS they budge first".

And then I don't budge. Does it make me feel any better?

Usually it does.

Actually, neither have I.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Yeah, it's a funny thing! Even if you're not motioning anything, even if your FACE says you're not moving, the other guy's gonna move first (weird exceptions aside).

People pick up on that stuff!

Kenny, I'm not going to adjust my expectations if they are reasonable, just to cater to the whims of some selfish jackass. Ok, maybe a bit much...but adjusting your expecations because of inconsiderate people is a downward cycle.

Yeah, like that lady who wouldn't have the common courtesy to make sure she stayed 10-15 feet behind you so you wouldn't have to wait 11 seconds to hold the door open for her! What an inconsiderate bitch. VERY selfish indeed.

Cool out, man.

EDIT
And it's not a downward cycle. You shouldn't be holding doors open for people in expectation they'll thank you, you should do it on general principle; their reaction should not matter.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard you say in the past how you favor the 2-door system, so that if they don't say anything or dont nod or smile or acknowledge you or make an effort to go through quickly or anything....that you'll "use" that second door as a lesson?

I still like your "Oh! You're WELCOME" response though...I might use it! :D

I can't stand the "bless you" crap after sneezing. You're a prick if you don't say it and painfully trite and obvoius and annoying if you do. I've just stopped saying it.

Wow!

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic, but you can ask Aqua...I have a personal mission to stop the "bless you" response!! I can't stand it...it's SUCH a useless phrase and people only say it because it's expected. A sneeze is just like a cough - a quick bodily reaction. No need to say "bless you" each time.

...I need to get a life, I suppose. :P

89th - maybe people who don't "pick up their pace" so they walk in for that "seamless transition" in door holding just make the assumption that not everyone would hold the door open. I've had that happen, where I am walking along, someone 15 feet ahead of me, and I assume that they'll just go in and I'll (gasp!) have to open the door myself. When they hold it open, I'm pleasantly surprised, jog to catch up, smile and thank them.

Holding the door is a fun game, though. Are you too far ahead, too close, required, expected, how many things do you have in your hand, is it a single or double door, do you pretend not to see someone, do you just not look? It's quite an experiment in human relations.

I dunno Dol, I guess I just assume that if you're close enough you'll hold the door.

I fully admit I'm gullible and have too much faith in people.

The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. I prefer to say "educating people since..."
Seriously, people who want to walk into me on my side of the sidewalk are invading my space. I never run into anyone. They just move out of the way. It's an energy thing.

One time I actually did run into someone. He was a really big fellow, and he just wouldn't move out of the way. On principal I plowed him right over. However, I did help him back up on his feet, and gave his seeing-eye dog a pat on the head.

Is there a whole sub-culture of sidewalk-gladiators that I'm unaware of, sizing each other up at a glance and establishing pecking order by who moves first? I weave in and out since I'm a fast walker, and never consider whether I'm moving for someone else or they're moving for me.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?
