It was just yesterday afternoon that I found out that she had leukemia and that it was already at a very advanced stage when they caught it and that she wasn't expected to live for very long. Last night I called my dad's aunt and made an arrangement to meet up with her so I could see my great-grandma tomorrow afternoon, but earlier today I got a call from my grandfather telling me that she had just passed away. ![]() This picture was taken on my grandpa's birthday last month. From the left to the right is my dad's Aunt Fran, my great-grandmother (dad's mom's mom) and myself: ![]() That's the last time I ever saw or talked to her. I couldn't call her last night because she wasn't at home (she did die at home though, which is what she wanted). I knew she didn't have much time left, but I had no idea that she would pass on so soon, nor did anybody else. We all thought she still had a little longer with us. ![]() In a way I'm happy because she is no longer suffering (she's been in pain for the last few years from various other health reasons too, but none of them life threatening) but I'm also very upset that I didn't get to see her or talk to her before she died. I also feel very badly for not being as close to her as my other grandparents and great-grandparents (I'm now down to one great-grandparent though, my mom's mom's mom, the one I posted my picture with a couple of months ago). As far as I know right now services are planned for this Saturday, but that's not official yet.

Very sad indeed. I'm sorry to hear you didn't get to see her like you had wanted, but like you said, at least she was spared the suffering of a long illness. Condolences to you and your family, jgoo

Chris, imagine in 60 or 70 years how lucky you'll be to be able to see and know your great grandson as an adult, when you're her age. I'm sure she felt the same way. I'm glad you were able to know your great grandma - many people aren't so lucky - but I'm also very sorry for your loss. |

Thank you to everyone who has replied here. I do feel very lucky to have known her, along with so many other people. I was born with a full set of grandparents and 5 great-grandparents, and am now down to 1 great-grandparent and 3 grandparents. I feel extremely fortunate to have known all of them, and even grow up with my dad's dad's parents for a little over 5 years when I was younger. I have been extremely lucky for having known all of them, and for still being very close to the ones I still have. |
