Can you disagree with the war and support the troops?

of course you can. i do.

There are many, many who would say you can't do both -- and lots of them are right here in this forum.

You're damned straight there are - and I'm one of them.

Just in case anyone's wondering, the 'no' vote isn't mine. I voted 'null', because, as I have indicated, I don't fully understand the question.

Dwain, that was a very thought-provoking post, thank you.

Larry, if I don't support a war, that does not make me anti-American, or anti-soldier, and to suggest so is to simplify the debate down to the level of absurdity. It's actually a very complicated issue for me. I didn't agree with going in to Iraq in the first place, but feel that once there, being overly critical of the ongoing conflict could have a negative impact. However, what am I supposed to do, start waving the flag, and chanting, and pretend that I agreed with it all along? I can't do that. I have the utmost respect for the allied soldiers who are over there. I'm not going to pretend that I think they should be there in the first place, though.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?

Something in this article just sprung out at me, and may explain my somewhat different reaction to the majority of you to this question as more of a cultural phenomenon.

UK troops in Afghanistan

What sprung out was:

Quote:

This is not considered some kind of deeply patriotic duty, it's a job and I think that's the difference between the British and American soldier, who is emotionally involved with the task.

"The British take a more dispassionate and methodical approach. The training is extensive and it's probably as good as you can get in removing any of the doubts in soldiers' minds."

Ignoring any of the 'our troops are better than your troops' rubbish, do the British and Americans possibly look upon their soldiers in a different light? I'm not saying either one is right or wrong, but I have noticed a markedly different attitude to the armed forces in the US than I'm used to.
