(and no, the answer is not "Debbie does") I'm looking for a nice tall go to h-ll red* one to match my shed door. I saw something called Babylon Red in the store, but wasn't sure if it would be the right color. Anybody grow these things? *from the Steve Miller Dictionary of Color Terms Jodi![]() |

I do dahlias, but I don't have a recommendation. Nothing in my collection is both tall (I assume you're looking for a "dinner plate" size, not something with smaller & more numerous flowers, not that I have anything there either) and a brilliant red as your shed door appears on my screen. Many of my dahlias were acquired without name from friends or family so I don't know what varieties most of them are. I'm also not sure whether you're looking for a dahlia that grows from tubers which are dug each year and stored inside over the winter (at least that's what we have to do here) or the so-called annual dahlia grown from seed. What do you call the plant flowering to the left of the door? My mother calls something that looks like it "mullin pink"; it's perennial, and the ones I have grew from seed that I harvested from my mother's flowers which owe their ancestry to ones she collected on her honeymoon. Big Al [edit] after I posted, I went to Park Seed and looked at what they had. Perhaps this is the sort of thing you're looking for? Dahlia Gregory Stephen [/edit] |

Yes, it's called Mullein Pink, or Rose Campion - among other names. Its latin name is "Lychnis Coronaria". It is so pretty - with soft grey green foliage, and brilliant fuschia flowers. It also spreads like mad, and will soon crowd out anything in its path. I am constantly digging it up where is isn't wanted. But I like flowers that do that - create an ever changing flowerscape for you each year. Jodiedit: (after seeing your edit :D) - I like the cactus dahlias. The dinnerplate varieties are too wide, and I find they fall over really easily. You still have to stake the cactus variety, but the blooms are easier to deal with. I'll check that one out - thanks! |

Jodi - Have seen other pics of your shed but this one is really pretty (different time of year maybe?) the way the sun is on it. Anyway I don't know anything about Dahlias but I found this pic of a babylon red one is it what you were looking for... http://www.americanmeadows.com/Images/prod...ylonRed_lrg.jpg |

What a gorgeous shed!! I have always grown dahlias. My father loved them and taught me how to grow them. But in my new house, we have no gardens planted yet and no dahlias. I'm afriad I cannot help you with specific dahlias to plant, but you could try contacting some master gardeners in your area for advice. |
