Part of the problem is the piano.
My teacher's 1994 Steinway D is basically worn out.
The action sux.
I am used to my meticulously maintained M+H.
I just can't get expression out of the D.
And many soft notes just don't sound.
I wish I could perform on my, or a well maintained piano.
  :dead:

Basically the bottom 1/3 of the dynamic range is not available on my teacher's piano.
Plus it is not even.
You have to memorize the notes that are too soft or harsh and compensate.

:mad2:

Kenny, I'm curious: If the piano is genuinely that bad, what's your teacher's excuse for not having it regulated & voiced?

I have to say, if I was paying for the privilege, I would get tired of this pretty quickly - especially if I was expected to perform on it.
One has a stronger hand when there's more people playing your same cards.

HOLY CARP!!!
I have to be careful what I say in case this gets back to him.
I have talked about it with him and it is a delicate subject.

He and his wife are both important pianists.
They both teach to a full load of students
This D gets constant hard use.

Maintaining any piano is expensive.
I'd imagine to keep this one up would be VERY expensive.

He also has a certain attitude towards piano technicians.
He says many of them think of themselves as Divas.
They say, "You need this. You need that. . .I'm not going to adjust this unless you pay my to adjust that also"
If you let them the technicians will rob you blind, he says.

He and I had the same tech for years.
No longer.
I told my teacher I give the tech a blank check to optimize the piano.
I have made a point of saying this MANY times hoping he'll get the hint.

Also, I suspect part of piano teaching is to teach pupils to get the most out of every piano they encounter.
Don't complain about the piano must be an unspoken mantra.

Also I am a lowly student.
He is very high on the musical food chain.
How dare *I* complain, I think to myself.
There is some of that.
