HOLY CARP!!!
|
![]() So I've been doing a pretty good job limiting my time here at Coffee Room, so that I can spend more time studying and practicing, etc. The problem is, now that I'm not spending my time here at Coffee Room, I can't figure out what there is to do! So I spend more time at Piano World instead, because I can't get myself to actually study. (small disclaimer: I actually do get more done now than I did before) I'm just too lazy to do everything that I want/need to do, now that I'm giving myself the time to do it all. How do you combat laziness?

I don't get it! You MADE the time! You already did it! You don't know what to do with it? PRACTICE! STUDY! Go have some good ol' fashioned college times!! No, but I understand what you mean Usually when I have the most time set aside to get stuff done, I end up getting less done. In college, I noticed I worked best when I was busy (I had organizations, job, activities outside of the university). Maybe clearing huge amounts of free time for yourself isn't good? Just a thought. As for what to do to motivate yourself to be productive? Well, pass the secret along to me once someone tells you the answer to THAT one! |

Maybe I can get a holey snowman to bless me or something. I want to fill my free time reading, practicing, writing, maybe even socializing a little bit in real life... The problem is once I sit down to read, my mind begins to wander after a few minutes. |

Here's my other pickle. I'm writing an essay that's due tomorrow. Well, the rough draft is due tomorrow, but I'm one of 4 lucky students who gets to print 19 copies of it - one for each student in the class, so that everyone can read it and write me a 2-page critique in order to prepare my final draft. So I'm almost done, but I got stuck trying to figure out how to finish it. Fortunately, I wrote an essay for my college applications that would be PERFECT for ending this essay - anyhow, everything I wrote about in the other essay is what I need to write about here, and my other essay was so well-written. I wish I could just copy it. But alas, that would be plagiarism (even though I'm the author), and now that I've gone back to read what I wrote before, I can't think of any better way to write it! |

Find a new place to read. I have to do that a lot. If it's something I have to really concentrate on, I can't get anything done in my room. Too many distractions (all from the computer- music and internet). Library never worked for me, either. I did too much people watching. I had to find a quiet nook somewhere. Find something that works for you. My mind wanders a LOT. I've never found a solution for that, though. In college, it just took me extra long to get readings and essays done, and I just had to accept that. I wish I could offer you some real advice, but I'm probably worse than you at committing my mind to tasks

Just rephrase it a bit! Really, if you're the author, what's the problem in that? |

University policy. All of my work has to be original for the class that I am writing it for. I can quote myself... but I don't think my teacher would like it if I quoted 11 paragraphs...

Ah, 11 paragraphs. I thought you meant just a conclusion paragraph or something. Then yes, I can see the logic in that rule. |

When I did my summer architecture internship in Milwaukee some 20 odd years ago, I worked for my uncle's cousin's firm. One of the architects was the heiress to the Claussen family, who always came across as sort of dour. One of the other staff called her "Ol' Pickle Puss". |

How do you combat laziness? Get up off your ass and do what you know you have to. ![]() Seriously, the old Chinese expression talks about the journey of 10,000 miles beginning with the first step. What it doesn't tell you is that first step is the hardest one to make. The rest come pretty easy after that. |

I'd think the 1st step would be relatively easy. After about 2 or 3 miles of dedicated walking, I'd stop and realize that there are still 9,998 miles left to go. It was kind of hard for me to decide to try and limit my time here, in order to make more time for other things. But I did it, and for a day or two, I was really into my studies - but only for a day or two. |

Faith, my man. George Michael got something right. Apropos, maybe it would be prudent to engage in some lewd act in a public facility? One must cover all the bases, after all. I fancy that you're spending alot of your newfound free time meticulously allocating every hour to something or other? I suggest you learn to cultivate a certain quality of single-mindedness, so that you can concentrate on each task as it comes. |

that's good advice. habit is overcome by habit. if you're trying to break a procrastination or laziness habit, you need to change your routine/habit of studying or whatever it is you want to devote more time to. easier said than done, but it does happen if you keep trying. |

The first step is the hardest. After that it is just putting one in front of the other. Once you have made the decision then your feet carry you and your lazy ass brain can STFU. |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Jb's right.. it is the first step. For me tehse days it is getting off of here and sitting down at the piano bench. I have the time and should be practicing at LEAST 2 hours a day. But.. I am exercising a lot, and keeping the house in order, etc... I just need to spend less of my day on here. PJ, what you describe is something most of us face. Pick up the book, go to the practice room, do whatever.. but just get SOMETHING started. It might help if you schedule your day in the morning. That's what I'm doing. Just book yourself all day.. but book some recreation time too. |
