Illegal except if the doctor performs one to save the mother's life. Perfect!

Well, I hope SD also beefs up their foster care, child support, and other social service programs to get ready for the onslaught of work they're about to get.

Not to discredit the law mind you, I'm just saying that this'll probably happen.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Wasn't it something like 4-18 procedures a week for the entire state of SD, AL? I bet there are way more US couples on long waiting lists to adopt newborns than they will have surplus. Certainly not enough for an "onslaught" in the areas you mention.

I'm not commenting on the law, btw, just the supposition that it will radically increase the need for a lot of other services in the state of SD. Not likely, I think, because of the already extremely low abortion rate.

I agree with your sentiments. More money should be invested in social programs, especially for kids.

Hunt will also introduce two other bills this week. One is meant to ensure doctors explain the risks of an abortion to a woman is writing.

Why bother explaining the risks of an abortion in writing when you've already banned it? I suppose he could say 'you realise, there is a risk that if I perform this abortion, we may go to jail'.

Well, it might not be a drastic change (especially since we're talking about SD), but nonetheless their Dept. of Social Services better be ready to hear more cases, esp. if they get involved with cases of illegal abortions.

I don't know much about South Dakota's numbers regarding abortions and social programs for displaced children, but this is a serious concern I always have when abortion laws are on the table. The fact still remains that sadly, the parents do NOT want the child; hopefully, good programs are in place to make sure the life the state law saves is properly cared for.

i think it has a good chance of passing in my home state. it's definitely a pro-culture of life state. :thumb:

south dakota won't be overrun by babies either. the total population of the state is around 750,000 . . . and they have good programs supporting adoption and social service programs for those needing such assistance. they are definitely not a people to legislate something and leave the affected people hanging. this is a state where neighbors continue to know and help each other.

My concern would be that by making it illegal, you are going to see more back alley abortions. Seems to me just saying something is illegal is like putting your head in the sand. Very backwards step, I think.

Didn't someone post a stat here saying more women have died from "back-alley" abortions SINCE Roe v Wade?

You want to force a woman to have a baby that she doesn't want?

Brilliant!

I guarantee unwanted children will grow up to become adults the state doesn't want either.

it is a great place to live and raise a family. in most places, people leave their houses unlocked all day (my family didn't have a key made to lock the door until we all went out of state for my brother's wedding in 1993), leave the car running in the grocery store parking lot in the winter so it stays nice and warm, say hello to people when walking by, wave at fellow drivers on the highway, welcome new neighbors, shovel sidewalks for people who aren't able to, give generously to families with medical bills, kids can play at the park and ride their bikes around without being threatened, etc.

there are very good adoption programs for mothers who don't want to keep their babies.

that's because europe is losing its soul. it's denying the inherent value of life and giving into the culture of death.

the people are great, the communities are friendly and safe, and the scenery is beautiful:

when i took steve to the badlands, he was amazed to see wild bighorn sheep. i guess they are somewhat rare to see in the wild (but not in SD).

i like the prairie, with its big skies.

I didn't lose my soul, I sold it. I actually sold it to an American, since they generally have all the money. I tried to sell him Tower Bridge as well, but he said he'd already bought it.

Compare Europe in 2005 to Europe in 1939 and tell me which has more soul or the greater Culture of Death. It is unwise to attempt to define a continent and condemn an entire series of cultures over one issue, which is much less important to most Europeans than it appears to be to a large number of Americans.

the culture of death is pervasive everywhere. attention has been given to europe (and other places) because of the dwindling attendance at religious services and a growing atheism.

i presume everyone knows where the "culture of death" language comes from. i agree it's happening.

No no, it's true, John sold his soul, I gave mine away. Rather than going to museums or concerts or anything poncy like that, instead Europeans stand around and like err... kill stuff, what do they call that again? Oh yes yes hunting, that's it. Yes that's what we do, we hunt stuff. We replace traditional "culture" with killing, it's great.

When we're not doing that, we drive around looking for unsuspecting tourists, when we find them we ask them casually, "Do you think life has inherent worth?" if they reply with a "yes" we scream "NO YOU ARE WRONG" and drive off as fast as possible. Man that is _so much_ fun, i couldn't tell you the number of afternoons i've spent denying life's inherent value, fun stuff.
