Do you always count the Ace as just one point? Can you give me the rules to the game as you play it?

Thanks, ILM

I don't know if these are the "official rules" but...

When the Ace is used as the low number in a run... we counted it as 1
If used in 3 or 4 of a kind or as the top card in a run after the king, we counted it as 15

If it was left in your hand, we counted it as 15 against you.

I'd rather fall into chocolate.

Thank you for your reply. That is how I remembered playing it, however, I have gotten on the web and the instructions state that Ace is always played as only getting one point. That doesn't seem good.

Rummy Rules

See the section Optional House Rules.

I think some people play stricter for Gin Rummy than Rummy.
Personally, I never liked Gin Rummy... too many ferkin cards to hold and still be able to drink and smoke!

Shammy,
Thanks for the link. I am trying to practice some ornamentations for a Chopin piece. It is bugging me, since I am not good at it.

If you wouldn't mind, can you tell me the difference between Gin Rummy and Basic Rummy. I know I can read it myself, but my piano teacher will be unhappy if I don't get these ornamentations right for my lesson.

Well, I don't know if these are the official rules but when we play strait rummy, we just lay down cards as we can on ourselves or by playing off any runs or sets the opponent has. The first person to discard out wins and the points left in your opponents hand count against them. They also get their points for the cards they played and then you would deduct what they had left in their hand. We always counted aces as 15 when they were left in the hand.

In Gin Rummy, there are a lot of variations but the way we play is that everything in your hand has to play out and you have to discard out.

Some people play a knocking out variation where you can play out whenever but the points left in your hand after discard have to be below a certain number. Sometimes that number is determined by the last face up card on the discard pile.

If you play out and discard your last card that was called "going gin" and you got a bonus for doing that.

Same as in regular rummy, we counted the cards against you left in your hand.

Basically, the difference between gin and regular is that in regular you lay down sets and runs as you have them and in gin its collecting them and laying down all at once and discarding out leaving your opponent with a handful of negative points.

Long time ago, we used to play canasta but I can't even remember how that game goes except I remember it used 2 decks and it was even more ferkin cards to hold!

I played a lot of Euchre in college. Thats a fun quick game you can talk and play at the same time.

I've always scored like this:

2 - 9 = 5 points

10 and face cards = 10 points

aces = 15 points

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
