A story that didn't make the MSM here is the US, but was all over the place in Europe: Three Algerians arrested in an anti-terrorist operation in southern Italy are suspected of being linked to a planned new series of attacks in the United States, Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu said Friday. The attacks would have targeted ships, stadiums or railway stations in a bid to outdo the September 11, 2001 strikes by Al-Qaeda in New York and Washington which killed some 2,700 people, Pisanu said. Now there is something old to report. More below... Jan 12th, 2006: 22:52:33 Perhaps you also recall a certain "suicide" in Oklahoma last year, which the Associated Press included in its Top 10 Oklahoma News Stories Of 2005: Joel Hinrichs III, 21, a University of Oklahoma student, died when a bomb he had constructed detonated right before halftime of an Oklahoma-Kansas State football game. He was sitting on a bench less than 100 yards from a stadium filled with 80,000 fans. Nobody else was hurt. FBI officials said they did not find any links between Hinrichs and terrorist organizations and officials said the death was a suicide. It turns out that things have changed a bit since that report was filed. As Mark Tapscott notes here, a search of Hinrichs' apartment turned up an airline ticket in the name of Fazal M. Cheema, a Pakistani who was Hinrichs' roommate. Destination? Algeria. In addition, according to the Daily Oklahoman, Cheema just happened to be visiting a nearby apartment shared by men of "Middle Eastern descent" when police arrived to arrest him. One of the men in the apartment was a visiting professor from Algeria... who had his suitcases packed and was ready to leave the country on an airplane the following day. And don't miss this report by Tamara Pratt of News 9 in Oklahoma City. She tells us that the explosive used by Hinrichs was TATP. As the Times in London tells us, "the al-Qaeda network has adopted TATP for its terror missions abroad," including the London 'tube' bombings. http://newsok.com/article/1634836/?template=news/main Stadiums? Algerians? You make the call. |
