 Ah, ok, then you might not know. But if you know the piece you might be able to help... You know in the first 9 bars of the sopII part, how on earth are you supposed to not breathe?! And if you really really really do have to even when you've been told you're not allowed to ( ), where is the best place without it standing out really obviously?![]() x |

How many are there in your section? You should be able to stagger the breathing so that there is no break in the line, just don't all breathe in the same place. Breath control is a long-term goal. My rib-cage is huge from years of singing but not in highschool. You can probably make the phrase in one breath if you work on it, but if there are three or more people singing the part, it really isn't necessary. Breathing technique is a balancing act. Make sure that when you inhale, your tummy goes out and your shoulders and chest do not go up. You need to fill up low, not high. Once you get the air in there, you have to keep it down there, not push it out quickly. Singers whose tone is airy or who split the sound or who sing very loudly but with a sort of vibratoless, strident quality are letting too much air go through the cords too quickly. One way I have success getting students to manage their air better is to tell them to imagine that they are still inhaling through the whole line they are singing. This seems to set their torso musculature in the "inhale" position and keeps them from pulling in their abs and squooshing out the air. |

It was a confusion of ideas between him and one of the lions he was hunting in Kenya that had caused A. B. Spottsworth to make the obituary column. He thought the lion was dead, and the lion thought it wasn't. - P.G. Wodehouse | |

You're welcome, glad it helped. Continue to think it through. It's said (and I believe it's true) that it takes seven years to train the breathing musculature and mechanisms to operate consistantly and automatically. That is about right in my personal experience and in observing students. Until that seven year time period is finished, you have to *think* about it constantly in order to make it work. As in most everything in life, what takes place between your ears is more important than what takes place elsewhere in your body. Think about getting the breath low, think about keeping it there, think about using only the amount you need, think think think
