Well, Pat's pretty representative of the religious right, isn't he?

Careful Mikhialoh there are some who lurk and reside quietly in our midst that would believe the Taliban are merely garden variety Mohamedans.

What an embarrasment to christianity! I am a christian and I hate that this man thinks he speaks for me. The arrogance to think he can know the mind of God.

I think I will stop now before I get too high up on my soap box.

Robertson: Ignorant Remarks Caused by God’s Wrath

by Scott Ott

(2006-01-06) — Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson, who yesterday told viewers that God’s wrath spurred Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s massive stroke, today said his own “ignorant remarks are another manifestation of God’s anger.”

The popular TV personality said God punished Mr. Sharon, 77, for dividing the land that God gave to the Israelites, and that Mr. Robertson’s own periodic claims to know the Lord’s motivation behind specific events are part of God’s judgment on the American church.

“If Christians would read the Bible, instead of just watching TV, they would understand that people who claim to know exactly why God does what He does are usually false teachers,” said Mr. Robertson. “God disciplines American Christians for their willful ignorance of the Scriptures by having me embarrass them every 60 days or so with another ridiculous remark.”

Mr. Robertson said that God had judged Ariel Sharon by making him “old and morbidly obese” and thus a high risk for cardio-vascular problems.

“It’s like a lightning bolt from heaven,” he said.

Yeah, right. What a bolt method.

Given Robertson's position as a leading spokesman for the Evangelical right and as a leader of the faith based GOP coalition supporting George Bush and how he is held up by so many conservative believers as a representative for Christianity, is it any wonder why so many find Christians to be judgemental and intolerant individuals, preaching a gospel of hate and revenge inspired by an avenging and vengeful God?

Just as Islamic leaders have been challenged to condemn and reject an version of Islam based on such evil, it will be interesting to see how many evangelical leaders and how many GOP leaders will condemn what Robertson has said and cut him out of any future involvement in Evangelical Christianity or GOP politics.

I'll bet there will be the typical hand-wringing over his words because it is politically correct to do so by the right, but there won't be many, their words will ring hollow and he will retain his position of influence in right wing politics and right wing evangelical Christianity.

I heard Robertson's remarks for the first time yesterday.

I don't place them in the same league as his Chavez remarks. In fact, from a theological perspective (which is what he was referring to), he may actually be correct.

sorry jolly but i disagree.

without going into any political discusssion or even religious discussion on the appropriatness of the gaza disengagement, the issue at hand is can someone state categorically that certain events transpire as "punishment" for other actions, in other words knowing the unknown, what is divine reward or punishment.

the jewish tradition holds that when moses (yes the number 1 jew) asks to see God (in exodus 23 for those who dont remember!!) what he really wanted to know was why the good suffer or the evil prosper, in other words, what is divine judgment. and he was not given the answer because no one can ever know this.

i absolutely reject anyone claiming to know why anyone suffers anything.

its pretentious, egocentric, false, and basically a pile of horsecrap.

I have been trying to follow this closely because I think the impact this has on Israeli politics and policies is of utmost importance to lots of us.

I have been using the Jerusalem Post site. Is the Post a good basic source for the news? Or is there a better one in Israel to follow?

At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”

No.

Here is the quote:

Quote:

“In the book of Joel, the prophet Joel makes it very clear that God has ‘enmity against those who divide My land.’ God considers this land to be His. When you read the Bible, He said this is my land. For any Prime Minister of Israel who decides he will carve it up and give it away, God said, “No, this is Mine.”

Actually Bacho (or should we call you Pat?), we can't really see what the man upstairs thinks. All we can really see is what some ancient and ignorant pastoral tribesman thought the man upstairs thinks.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

This may surprise you, but Pat would probably agree with your next to last statement.

I'm not carrying water for Pat, I think he's pretty dumb for a smart man on occasion (JD-Yale Law, I forgot where his Masters in Theology is from, but it is First Tier), but most Fundamentalists still see God as not only loving, but also jealous and vengeful.
