I think Harper's choice of Rona Ambrose as Minister of Environment is excellent. She has forgotten more about Kyoto than most people will ever hope to know- she did, after all, write the Alberta gov't's policy regarding the Kyoto Protocol. She will take a very pragmatic and rational approach to the job. |

I'm even less sure that this is good,
Ex-Liberal minister from B.C. joins Harper cabinet Last updated Feb 6 2006 08:54 AM PST CBC News Former Liberal industry minister David Emerson has jumped ship to become a Conservative cabinet minister. The Vancouver-Kingsway MP is the new Conservative minister of international trade, with responsibilities for the Vancouver Olympics and B.C.'s Gateway transportation project. The 60-year-old former banker, businessman and economist was elected as a "star" Liberal candidate in the riding of Vancouver-Kingsway in 2004, was appointed to Paul Martin's cabinet and was re-elected as a Liberal last month. The fact that he had switched parties became apparent when he showed up at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Monday morning to be sworn into the Stephen Harper cabinet. Emerson's defection follows the recent example of former Conservative MPs Belinda Stronach and Scott Brison, who crossed the floor last year to become Liberal cabinet ministers. RELATED STORY: Stephen Harper sworn in as 22nd prime minister During the recent election campaign, Emerson directed this strong attack on the Conservative leader's agenda for Canada: "It's now not just, 'Can Stephen Harper mount a credible campaign?' It's people now having to decide, 'Can we really live with what Stephen Harper will deliver?' "And I have to tell you, I have never seen a right-wing government in all of my life, and I've been in government or near government for 32 years, I have never seen a Conservative government that didn't come in, in the first year or two and slash social programs, raise taxes and create an awful lot of havoc that they did not disclose before the election." INDEPTH: The Harper cabinet Emerson was formerly B.C.'s deputy minister of finance. He also served as president of the Western and Pacific Bank of Canada (now Canadian Western Bank), the B.C. Trade Development Corporation and Canfor Corporation – B.C.'s largest forestry company. He also oversaw the expansion of Vancouver International Airport during the 1990s. B.C. will have three other representatives in the new Conservative cabinet – Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl and Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn. |

I was a bit surprised about Chuck Strahl appointment owing to his lung cancer. I'm sure that if his strength holds he'll do a good job though. Don't worry about Stockwell, better there than in a portfolio in which he could do real damage- like Foreign Affairs. This way all he has to do is keep communications open with the US Dept. of Homeland Security and make a feew appearances on the domestioc rubber chicken circuit. |

So.... the whole David Emerson defection thing is big news here; constituents are really upset that the liberal candidate they voted for, who was vocally against all things conservative, crossing the floor. NDP was next in the riding, not PC, and I can certainly understand the anger of the voters. I'm curious, is it even talked about anywhere else, or is this just a local issue? |
