If you plan on voting, which party do you plan on voting for? If it's another one(eg. Green Party, Bloc Quebecois), please specify. |

I actually haven't decided, Riley. 'None of the above' will have to suffice for now. I may possibly just vote for my riding, not the party, because I don't see any bright lights there at all. So I may just vote Green. I should see if we have someone running for the Bloc; I don't know if there is anyone. You're still in school, right? Who would you vote for, if you could? |

I watched the leader of the Green Party- Harris is his name- the other night on TV. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. I am of the impression the Green Party was set up by the Conservative Party to siphon votes away from the left Liberals and right leaning NDP voters. |

I agree, Harris is not going to take the party anywhere. It's a pretty pathetic bunch we have to pick from. I think my vote will probably come down to picking the 'least bad'. And right now, I'm not sure who that is. Or what party that is. |

I wonder if it's ever occurred to the Bloc that their best hope of victory might be to field candidates in every province except where it currently does. |

Unfortunately, I don't believe the Bloc is aware that there are other provinces.

I had a student ask me that the last week of school. At the time I gave him an answer (after we had a little chat about political affiliation being a private thing etc etc). Now I'm not so sure. I want to vote NDP - I really like Layton, I like our candidate in this riding and worked on her last campaign. But this riding has been a Liberal stronghold since...geez, I know our last Liberal MP was here from the time I was 10...dunno before that. And this year we have a new Liberal candidate. No one knows much about him. The Conservative candidate is well known (and, IMO, an asshole). I'm scared that people will vote for the one they know... I don't know. I'm organizing Student Votes at our school (grade 6, 7 and 8 students learn about the parties and the platforms and then we have an election the week before the actual election. The results are tabulated nation-wide, and we find out who would have won had school aged kids voted. It's a neat way to teach them about how the election works). I have a feeling that I'll decide as I'm presenting the parties to the students. |

You think so? While I agree the Liberals have to go, the thought of the Conservatives being in power gives me the chills. |

Ah yes, the Conservatives are frightening. How so? They really don't differ ideologically from the Liberals- both pretty much jockey for the centre except that the Liberals tend towards a stronger Federal G'ovt whereas the Conservatives tend towards decentralizing to the provinces. Both arguably are the Canadian corollary of right Democrats (Joe Leiberman types) and Bull Moose Republicans. While I am not certain that the federal Conservatives are capable of forming a government and maintain unity as a party, they do not frighten me in the least. |

Martin didn't fair too well in the debate. His suggestion that if elected the Liberals will pass a law preventing the Federal G'ovt from using the "Notwithstanding Clause" went over like a lead balloon. Was he not aware that the clause preserves parliamentary power and prevents the judicial tyranny that exists in the USA. |

He was looking a little stressed, wasn't he? I really question his thinking in making that statement about the notwithstanding clause. He'd obviously planned it, as he had a press release ready to hand out immediatley after the debate. I don't think he's done himself, or the Liberal party, any favours. |

Actually it made no sense to raise it- especially since Martin himself has already stated that if the courts were to try to force relgious institutions to perform same sex marriages, the Liberal G'ovt would invoke the notwithstanding clause to protect freedom of religion as it is written in the Charter. |

I am so proud of my kids! They are in grade 6, and we're doing election coverage - including Student Votes. Next Friday they go to the polls and we get to see which party would win if they were actually the voters. We submit those results to Student Votes, and then on Monday, they'll tell us who the under 18 set wants in government. Anyways, we've been discussing a lot of tough issues with them. Their level of understanding is rather amazing, and their interest is astounding! The first day I brought it up (the day after the election was called in December) only one kid had any idea what I was talking about. After the Christmas Break, a few kids were interested. After teaching one class, the next few days I had about half the class approach me in the halls and tell me about how they talked to their parents about it, watched coverage on the news, the debate, etc. It was really cool! I'm having so much fun teaching them about this! It's a bit hard to keep my personal political opinion out of it, but I'm doing my best to lay out both sides of the issues. I also had the pleasure of discussing the first past the post system with my enrichment student - we spent about 20 minutes discussing the problems with it, and he independently suggested that we should change our system to rep by pop, so we discussed some of the problems with that system and why it hasn't happened. It's been a great week - I hope that at least a few of these kids remember how interesting they're finding this and carry that forward! |

Glad to hear you're doing that, Dol! Is that 'student votes' the cross Canada one? I think it will be very interesting to see the results of that. Good to hear you've some 6th graders fired up about the election. My son in 10th is also studying it, and at this age, there is a lot of cynicism. Rightly so, and unfortunately this election lends itself to that, but it is a shame that more enthusiasm isn't there. They seem to understand a lot of what is going on and being said, but are very scornful of the tv ads, the mud slinging, the lack of anything new being talked about. I've over- heard some interesting conversations from the back of the car recently. I don't think our political leaders are impressing the teens of Canada. |

 If a Conservative leader actually managed to kill people just by holding his hand up I'd be forced to break the habit of a lifetime and vote Tory. And not through fear, I hasten to add. Bad guys are cool. |
