ZOOOOOM!

![]() What with all the terrorism/9/11 talk going on today, it reminded me of the Flight 93 memorial in Somerset County, Pennyslvania. One random Saturday, a friend of mine suggested we drive there (I remember it was only a few months after 9/11, but cannot recall when exactly). It took all day, but it was a very interesting trip. Now, this location is not easy to get to. We had to take many dirt roads, cross a few old wooden bridges, and saw many a farm and small town. We had to stop and ask directions many times, since I believe we didn't even have a map with us. Everyone we stopped to speak with was more than helpful. They just saw us get out of the car, and before we said anything they smiled and said, "yeah, you want to go that way." We definitely weren't the first people who tried to get there and got lost. On our last stop before getting there, the old man giving us directions explained to us that he heard the plane crash right outside his auto repair shop; so did the rest of the town. Apparently, it took a bit for the authorities to get there and close the area off, so for all they knew a bomb went off in Somerset county. (This is not the first time Somerset County has seen something this catastrophic. For example, I was fortunate, or unfortunate enough to drive through the county after the Tornados of '98 came through and ripped a hole through Salisbury). The memorial is in this big open field, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Trees surround the rolling hills of the farmland, which were covered in high grass, and the site itself is nothing more than a few panels of chain-link fence and a gravel pathway around it. The crash site itself was about half a mile away, but county police officers were there and weren't allowing visitors. From what I remember, there were american flags and rosaries EVERYWHERE. Hundreds were attached to the fence, along with letters and other things. There was a granite plaque of sorts on the ground there, with the words "Let's Roll" engraved in it. I found that the most interesting thing at the site was the gravel. People picked up pieces of gravel from the ground to spell out many things in the dirt surrounding the memorial. Some were prayers, others were copies of what was on the plaque (which were too numerous to count), others were personal messages... all spelled out using the gravel. There was a guardrail close to the fence, with a few stickers on them, and MANY things written in sharpie. Everything you can imagine, really; sad, hateful, religious... you name it. So much was put on the small fence that it was hard to believe. We didn't see anyone while we were there, and we saw nobody coming or going, but you could tell that many hundreds of people have been there before. Anyway, that's what I remembered when I went there. I was wondering if anyone else has had the opportunity to go. |

I have been there. My wife and I took the children with us. I grew up about 45 minutes from the site. My nephew was working in the area that day. We did not hear from him for several tension filled hours after the news. It is quite a sobering site. ![]() |

No problemo, Kenny. I figured I'd talk about it a bit, since the location's kind of inaccessible, and I figured only a few people from here might have seen it. |

Aqua, didn't you know we shot down that plane? There were a few black people on it, and so Bush shot it down. |

Just making fun of those comments about Bush being a racist or not caring about black people, etc...kinda like when a while back people were saying stuff about how Bush directed the hurricane towards black-populated cities, blah blah blah...

Regardless of any past jokes, you are making a point at the expense of those people. I understand completely the point you're making. What you're not getting is that the point you're trying to make is not appropriate to associate with this particular incident. |

Why? Because the people who died there don't deserve to have it cheapened to make a political point. Nor do the hurricane victims. Your point is valid ... but it is inappropriate to make the point at the expense of other people, especially those who gave their lives in a tragedy in no way related to the point you're trying to make. |

The only people who are "at the expense" of my jokes, are those who think Bush is a racist and hates black people...as has been said before. 44 people died during this crash and it's wrong to make a joke... 1400 people died during the hurricane (31 times more than flight 93) and no one complained about those jokes. In either case, the jokes are making fun of those who think Bush is a racist...not at black people. The only rationale for not making a joke now, would be because of the potential seriousness of the thread...which hasn't been mentioned yet. |

No, the reason not to make the joke now ... or in the past (about the hurricane victims) would be because it is insensitive, and you are above utilizing such a crass technique to make a point. And what are the "jokes" you're referring to earlier? I thought you were referring to Kanye's George W. Bush comments, which have nothing to do with hurricane victims who died, or terrorist attack victims. Again, you're just not seeing the bigger picture, because you're stuck on the point you're trying to make. You're so convinced that we don't get what you're trying to say, that you've lost all ability to see the bigger picture. We get it .... Now it's time to realize it's wrong. |

Regardless, it's a pretty tasteless "point" to make. Hurricane victims, Flight 93 passengers, or whoever else; it's tasteless to speak of them in that way. |

This all goes back to Kanye's comment about how Bush doesn't care about black people. Same with Louis Farakan (sp?) and other leaders who have said this. Those comments were made during the hurricane aftermath, and jokes were made back then about how "bush aimed the hurricane at New Orleans because of the black population" or how "Bush blew up those levees on purpose", etc.... Some people here (including me) made those jokes to point out the idiocy of some of these racist conspiracy theories...and there were ZERO complaints....in fact some people joined in! I made this one comment here about how there was a conspiracy that the gov't also blew up flight 93, and added to that conspiracy something even more radical...that Bush did it because black people were on board...obviously referring to the previous allegations that Bush hates black people....which is just dumb. |

Fine ... you're not getting the point anyone else is trying to make, because you're too busy making yours. Fine, it all goes back to Kanye. And Kanye was wrong for doing it. There should be no argument now as to whether or not what you're doing is wrong, because the very point you're making is that it's wrong. As I said... WE GET IT. Regardless of who has done what for whatever reasons ... we're talking about the joke you made here in this thread, and two of us have said it was wrong. What exactly are you debating? |

Hey 89th, Just say you're sorry and lets move on. Oh, BTW, although 44 people did in fact die, I prefer to think of it as 40 people were murdered and 4 worthless blood suckers committed suicide. Mark |
