No reason why the same mechanism couldn't be put under the control of the rider, if desired, similar to the manually selected automatic transmissions promoted in some performance cars. The planetary gearing arrangements remind of the old 3-speed "English racer" that I rode in college. I always thought that it was a straight-forward design, but it lacked the large range of ratio changes that the derailleur mechanisms allowed. Big Al |
