HOLY CARP!!!

So, I just discovered a course on "Music in our Lives" with one of the piano professors. It's a small seminar class, 3 credits, and the professor is really cool, and I definately want to take this class. Here's the problem, though: then I have 19 credits for next semester which is really a lot. I could do it, but I actually think that 19 is the max. number of credits one is even allowed to take. This semester I have 16 credits. So, I've been looking at my potential list of classes, and almost all of them are classes that I am definately going to take: Musicology, French, piano lessons, English, and this "Music in Our Lives" seminar. That right there is 15 credits. The remaining two classes are Philosophy (3 credits) and ear training (1 credit). I'd be willing to stretch and do 18 credits (that's scary too, but it's better than 19) or I can not do philosophy and take ear training, and that would be only 16 credits (which is what I am doing this semester). But... ear training class is the first in a series required for music school, so if I don't take it now, then I'll have to take it next fall, and I'll just be one more semester behind in beginning the series of theory classes. But.... I'd really love to study philosophy... But... 18 credit hours really is a ton of work, and ear training is really important.... But... *sigh* |

Not sure what to suggest, but I hope you can take the Philosophy course at some time. It'd be a nice balance to all the music, and you obviously love to think, and discuss ideas. You'd love it! |

Take what you have to first, Sam. It's really aggravating to have enough credits to graduate, but to be short a required course. If you want to take a crack at a really heavy load, go for it, but be prepared to drop something before the final add/drop date. And try to include something you really expect to be enthusiatic about if you can manage it. There are still a few courses I'd like to take and I graduated 38 years ago. Big Al |

Back before the dawn of time, I once loaded up a semester with 21 hours. Biology, Inorganic Chemistry, Religion, English Lit, Sociology, American History. Sleep became an option, a luxury I could not afford. I actually fell asleep during a chemsitry final, pencil in hand. It ain't worth it. Not for me, anyway. Different strokes for different folks, but I found an average load of about 16/semester was about right. Oh, and about those required courses....listen to Al, he's right. |

Jolly's right. I took 23 credits my last semester because I couldn't afford to stay an extra semester to spread out the work. It sucked, horridly. I mean, I had to, or else it was take a break from school or somehow get another loan, but if you can help it, don't take more than 18. That was about the norm for me during school, and it was DEFINITELY enough to keep me on the edge of psychotic. Best not to push it. |
