"organic" alcohol?

HOLY CARP!!!
does that make any sense?

I was just looking at a bottle of vanilla extract (hey, I'm pretty wild and exciting) and the ingredients list organic vanilla bean extractives and organic alcohol. I can see alcohol made from organically grown grain (though why would be a question), but this doesn't make any sense to me!

smells darn good though.

I can only assume that it also means the vanilla was grown organically as well--and undoubtedly extracted by virgins.

I've always wondered where they find those extra virgins who make my olive oil.

it contains carbon.

Yeah, I suppose they're referring to the fact that it's not pure ethanol, and it came from organic ingredients. But chemically speaking, ALL alcohol must be "organic" alcohol.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Well, exactly. It just struck me as a pretty silly thing to put on a label.

To make vanilla extract, all you have to do is shell the beans into an appropriate amount of vodka, and let sit.

what's an 'unshelled' vanilla bean look like? I've only seen the beans (pods?), for sale here in some places, usually individually in plastic tubes, for big $$. No idea how old/stale they might be.
