HOLY CARP!!!
|
I posted many moons ago about how I really WANTED to enjoy wine, but just didn't. Over the past several months, I've been picking up a bottle every now and then, just trying different things, and now I really enjoy it! To the point that I'm just going in and buying random stuff from different wineries and different regions, trying them, then looking reviews up to see what people who know what they're talking about think compared to what I thought. It's fun! Of course, I'm on a bit of a budget, so I'm not buying crazy expensive wines. But I'm always pleased with myself when I find a bottle of wine for under $16, really enjoy it, then when I look it up discover that some of the major publications have listed it as an excellent value or whatever. I'm still baffled on how all of the sudden I'm enjoying wine, when I've spent about 8 years wanting to enjoy it and not. But now I'm loving it! |

It's funny how it can sneak up on you suddenly like that! I never enjoyed wine until I lived in Europe... and then I came to think of it as indispensable with dinner! I'm not that bad now... it's too expensive a habit! What wines do you like, Dol? |

$16 is a very expensive bottle of wine to me; I usually pay 10 bucks. Way under. (Have you heard of Two-Buck Chuck?) That said I really do appreciate nicer wine when I splurge and buy it. Mostly I don't buy is because it is a crap shoot. I have tasted very expensive wine that tasted worse than much cheaper wine. And research is a hassle, or I'm too lazy. |

Kenny, remember that I'm Canadian so $16 is probably more like a $12 bottle in the US. Usually, I'll buy around the $13 mark here. And i've had very good luck. Though if I just want an inexpensive wine for me to have with dinner on my own, I'll just pick up a Yellow Tail Chardonnay for $10.45. Last night I bought a Wyndham Estates Bin 999 Merlot (2003) for $16 - my big splurge  I'm looking forward to it.

Wine always seemed cheaper in Ontario than it does in the US - it felt like a $12Cdn bottle was also about $12US. Mind you, I'm in Massachusetts, so they might just be catering to the Frasier Crane types and making out like bandits. |

Maya: No, I- I like to think about the life of wine. Miles Raymond: Yeah. Maya: How it's a living thing. I like to think about what was going on the year the grapes were growing; how the sun was shining; if it rained. I like to think about all the people who tended and picked the grapes. And if it's an old wine, how many of them must be dead by now. I like how wine continues to evolve, like if I opened a bottle of wine today it would taste different than if I'd opened it on any other day, because a bottle of wine is actually alive. And it's constantly evolving and gaining complexity. That is, until it peaks, like your '61. And then it begins its steady, inevitable decline. Miles Raymond: Hmm. Maya: And it tastes so f***ing good. - "Sideways" |

KC, I watched that a couple of days ago. Apparently sales of Pinot Noir have gone up by a third since the film's release. I knew this before I saw it, but strangely enough it didn't make me want to drink Pinot. I was drinking Sauvignon at the time so that might have something to do with it.. |

Cab sauv is my favorite, too! But I've found many people don't like how heavy it is, and really prefer Pinot Noir. I have to say, Pinot Noir is much more versatile when you're trying to match foods. |

For red I like a good ole cabernet actually, I find them so warming. I'm really into Riesling as well, a lot of them remind me of lychees, which are my favourite fruit. |

Have you ever had ice wines (eiswein)? Many of them have very intense lychee flavours... |

Since my memory is completely addled from the effects of long-term alcohol usage, I can only look in the cupboard and fridge for prices: Kendall-Jackson California Chardonnay, 2003 - $10.99 Santa Rita Maipo Valley Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, 2003 - $9.99 This looks like a good opportunity for some long term research

Some wine stores will have them, but they're quite rare, so you're better off checking wine specialty shops. They're not produced every year, and don't keep well. Very thick, intensely sweet, deep, and flavourful, unlike anything else. Quite expensive, unfortunately, but worth trying at least once. |

I was considering joining one of those wine clubs. You tell them your price range and every month they mail you wine they select. Of course there is opportunity for corruption but it must be better than picking the cool-looking bottles like I do. |

KC - Have you tried the Niagara Region ice wines? When I worked at the wine shop in Toronto, we hosted an Ice Wine tasting night with a few of the Niagara wineries. It was fantastic! John - I'll look into those and see if they are listed on the site

Well, dol, I was going to say your new appreciation of wine had something to do with age , but I see our friend mp is guzzling fine bordeaux, so guess that ruins that theory!I usually stay around the $ 12-13 level, and have found there's lots of really good choices there. Chile, Australia, South Africa are usually safe bets. I'm a big fan of shiraz! And much to my surprise, our local B.C. wines have really come a long way in the last few years, (whites, anyways) and are priced around there, or a bit higher. There will always be pricier wines, but I rarely buy them. Sure they may be fabulous, but I just don't need to know that. I used to go to lots of wine tastings, and have sampled some really outstanding wines. But I just can't see spending that much money on wine. One bottle of French champagne, or several Spanish cavas; who's party would you rather go to?

Sue, Have you tried Jackson-Triggs? They apparently have an estate in Niagara and one in Okanagan. I picked up a bottle of their Niagara Sauvignon Blanc (Proprietors Selection) last week because it was only $8.95 and it was just for me and it was quite tasty!

Oh, definitely! I prefer Niagara icewines to the German stuff. When I'm up in T.O., I stock up at the LCBO stores, some for myself, and some for gifts. My favorite is Reif Vidal... I'm not that big a fan of Inniskillin. Magnotta is a good value. |

Yum, I love Sauvignon Blanc, my current favourite white! I don't actually think I've ever had a Niagra Jackson-Triggs....I certainly know the JT name, but, well, I shall have to go look closely. I wonder if we don't have any Niagra wines here in B.C., or maybe they just hide them in our liqour stores?? Are B.C. wines availabe in Ontario? Time for some research! Had a really delicious red last night; South African, 'Golden Kaan' 2003 Shiraz. $11.99. Really good! |
