Karl Rove's security clearance!; Anyone else find this astonishing?

Karl Rove is under investigation for revealing the secret identity of a covert CIA agent and apparently has been for more than a year. Yet, the White House has done nothing to curtail or suspend his ongoing access to top secret information.

This is astonishing. A reckless disregard for our national security.

WASHINGTON — An intelligence analyst temporarily lost his top-secret security clearance because he faxed his resume using a commercial machine.

An employee of the Defense Department had her clearance suspended for months because a jilted boyfriend called to say she might not be reliable.

An Army officer who spoke publicly about intelligence failures before the Sept. 11 attacks had his clearance revoked over questions about $67 in personal charges to a military cellphone.

But in the White House, where Karl Rove is under federal investigation for his role in the exposure of a covert CIA officer, the longtime advisor to President Bush continues to enjoy full access to government secrets.

The Clinton White House long had people handling classified information that had never passed a security clearance. I only recall yawns over that. The White House Chief of Staff is likely to get more deference than some Army officer. It shouldn't take a rocket (or political) scientist to see how that would come to pass.

jbryan,

I think it was Steve Miller who recommended a mantra to another conservative member here. Let me suggest it for you. I think it went something like this....

"Bill Clinton is no longer President. He can't hurt me any more. Bill Clinton is no longer President. He can't hurt me any more."

Actually, yes.

While I have no doubts that there are those who get secrets without having adequate clearance, I am astonished and appalled that top level White House officials would pass that information on to the media, in doing so out a covert American spy, and do it solely for political retribution.

I am equally astonished and appalled that the President went back on his original promise he made to rid his Administration of anyone involved and now is doing nothing about it but waiting for a Special Prosecutor to indict.

I thought he took an oath to protect the United States, not to protect his appointed aides.

Whether or not there were those in the Clinton Administration who inappropriately had access to secret matters is totally beside the point.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not astonished that his security clearance hasn't been revoked.

It's part and parcel of leaving him in his job. Simply put, the Deputy Chief of Staff can't be Deputy Chief of Staff unless he has access to classified information.

So pick on W for not firing Rove's fat ass. As long as he isn't fired, though, I'm afraid he still has to have access to classified information.

Just pointing out your hypocrisy, Rick.

I really don't care about Clinton.
